A complete overhaul

I sincerely hope that my alma mater never puts an emphasis on winning football games over integrity and respect of our entire student population and hires a scumbag like either one of those two individuals.

I'm not saying I don't want to see us win (before you people pull that straw man argument out on me). I am saying I don't want us to sell our souls to win tho.

Regarding Petrino...I'd happily have him.

Listen, the guy got caught with a young hottie. He isn't a member of ISIS.

Dude made a mistake, lost his job for it, was ridiculed and vilified for it, and truly got nothing more than he deserved. But who among us has never made a mistake? His was just on the national stage because of his position.

Since then he has done nothing untoward that I can find, has stayed out of the media spotlight, and built a juggernaut with arguably less talent than is on the current Vols roster.

Put a freaking morals clause in his contract if you want, but hire the guy.

Let's be honest. If someone like Petrino replaces Butch here and he wasn't doing any better, would our fanbase be calling for his head too? That's what I'm saying, any coach that takes this HC job at Tennessee, better be prepared to get blasted by this fanbase. It WON'T matter who he is.

Pretty much. Wins aren't enough here.

Then whats the answer? When are we going to see the Vols play up to their potential? Yes we are winning and I am happy for that. But you cannot honestly just be totally happy with what you have seen this season.

I mean we have had to hold our breath against every team we have played and have not even started playing anybody yet.

Frankly when you have the kind of hype we have had this year, its not. We should be playing like we want to win a championship. We have yet to do that. Whats wrong with wanting this team to perform up to its potential?

I'm probably just as concerned as you BOT. I see this team is struggling at the beginning of the season but I'm not calling for Butch's head or giving up completely on the football team. I'm just saying that whoever is the next coach here at Tennessee, better be prepared to take criticism if something doesn't go right. The way our fanbase is acting right now, we're no better than our football team.

His behavior still labels him as an amoral scumbag as far as I'm concerned and I hope I never see him representing my alma mater. I don't think your opinion is wrong. I just don't agree with it. It's just my own personal opinion.

Yes he's a very good coach and has proved that at least two schools. But i hope I never see him representing the Universtiy of Tennessee

Enough with the Gruden nonsense. He's never going to coach a down in football again.

I have never understood why people think that Gruden woild be an automatic success? Just because a coach is successful on one level doesnt mean he will be on another. Look at Saban, Kiffin and Spurrier. Carroll is an exception.

Dude has been out of the coaching biz longer than Debord when we hired him, but yes I'm sure he'd do fine as a college football head coach (a position he has never held).

Read my response on why I quoted JG. But I even after his absence from coaching, I still take Gruden over butch everyday of the week.

Gotta love all of the responses from people that think things are ok. Instead of realists like myself "just breathing", how about you all quit breathing in glue.

Thanks for your reasonable response. I don't disagree that what he did was morally reprehensible, but I am looking at him since then... I guess I'm just willing to believe that it's possible to redeem yourself.

I can't get behind this. Read the article. He's just not a good person. Winning is not more important than having a good leader.

To be clear I believe in second chances. But actions have consequences. And sometimes those consequences are irreversible and close doors. That's just life. That's all I'm saying.

I don't think we as an institution need to lower our standards and that's how I personally view a Petrino hire. And again it is solely just my personal opinion.

Jones screwed up by hiring DeBord--that was his first mistake. He should have hired a great OC. Look at Saban: You think he likes Kiffin? He doesn't! He never misses a chance to rub Kiffin's nose in his subordinate status. BUT he knows he's a damn good offensive coordinator! You don't hire old cronies. His second mistake was either recruiting bad offensive linemen or hiring a bad offensive line coach. But the offense, generally, isn't good enough--though nice to see we threw the ball more today. I figured we would--and that should help a bit.

I agree with this thread . Outline lacks toughness and a leader . Until someone has had enough this team is mediocre at best.

yeah...that's part of it. If the POTUS can get away with it, why not the rest of mankind?

The way he left UL the first time...and the Falcons. Plus WKU when they gave him a chance....they had to see it coming though.

It'd be Kiffin 2.0 when he got a better offer.

Guy's a good O mind, but he's a mercenary. Maybe most of them are, but he wasn't good enough at Ark to win the west, although he was pretty dang good.

So what makes you confident he'll do better w/ our VOLS?

well...I try to be positive about most things.

I am not a happy fan either at the present moment.

I have not seen the effort this year compared to the past 3.

As much as I hate the term moral victory...our VOLS looked better losing last year (cept Ark) than they have winning this year....and it is concerning.

Maybe there's a method to the madness....at least I sure as hell hope so.
