He could throw a nice long ball too.

Tee had a stacked team in his side that made him better. His skills fit right in and helped the team to be better. Our only wink link for a long while was too conservative play calling on both sides of the ball. Sure depth and inexperience were issues at times, but lots of talent across the board for years.

Both of those teams got hot during the season playing really well. I wouldn’t have expect either to have laid an egg in the NC game then if now.

Ok, but along that line of thought, so did Florida in 1995. 10 of their 12 wins were by 3 or more scores; their closest games were still being double-digit wins against teams in the top 10.

And look what Tommy Frazier and Nebraska did to them.

1990s Nebraska did that to pretty much everyone they played. We experienced that ourselves following 1997 and 1999.

  • Passed for a season-high 311 yards versus Arkansas, the second-highest total in his career, while establishing a career-best mark of 354 yards of total offense (11/13/1999).
  • Earned SEC Offensive Player of the Week honors in back-to-back games against Georgia and Alabama.
  • Accounted for all three of Tennessee's scores (two rush, one pass) in a 21-7 win at Alabama (10/23/1999).
  • Racked up 332 yards of total offense and accounted for all four scores (three rush, one pass) in Tennessee's 37-20 win over Georgia (10/9/1999).

  • Named SEC offensive player of the week against South Carolina (10/31/1998) when he rewrote NCAA and SEC record books for passing efficiency. Martin set NCAA marks for most consecutive completions in one game (23) and most consecutive in a two game span (24).
  • Had over 200 yards of total offense seven times and collected a then-career-high 352 against South Carolina (10/31/1998). Also tied a career high with four touchdown passes against the Gamecocks.
  • Set a career high with four touchdown passes against Houston (9/26/1998), throwing for 234 yards on 14-of-19 passing.
  • In Tennessee's season opener against No. 17 Syracuse (9/5/1998), led the Vols downfield late in the fourth quarter to set up a game-winning field goal as time expired in a 34-33 victory over the Orange.

He was actually a system QB. He was perfect for the system. Unfair to judge him after Peyton. He was excellent. He made plays with his feet. His mental clock was accurate. Instincts good. He was a very good QB and this is a very tainted rewrite of those seasons. A team does not go 23-3 with an average QB starting.

Tee got it done. He led his team to victory. Comparing him to JG exposes you. I watched him live and on TV. He was one of the all-time great VOLS.
He lacked Peyton's talent, but accomplished more with less. That is worth something.
He led the VOLS to a National Championship.

Now, He is not one of our great coaches. Very big flop as a coach. He disappointed me there. He delivered zip on the sideline and in the booth. I am not even sure he really brought in recruits that stayed after the payola culling.

Ridiculous comparison.

1. Different game 20+ years ago. JG had a lot more short, check down passes that inflated his comp %.

2. Tee’s TD to int ratio was much better and his ints weren’t nearly as costly.

3. Tee accomplished a lot more running the ball vs JG. How many yards and TDs did Tee have rushing vs JG.

4. Tee managed the game better and his W-l record is what counts. He made plays when they mattered.

Very weak argument when you just through out pct, ypa, TDs, int comparison. Very rarely do these stats tell the whole story

1. JGs Y/A was higher than Tees. So you are wrong.

2. No Tees TD/INT ratio wasn’t MUCH better. It was better. But let’s not forget who Tee was throwing to compared to JG. It’s not even close.

3. Ok Tee was a better running QB. So what?

4. A QBs W/L record is irrelevant. The 1998 team was INFINITELY more talented than our 2019 squad. Would anyone on the 2019 team start for the 1998 team? No. The talent that surrounds you is extremely important.

So at the end of the day no Tee isn’t a superior QB to JG. He happened to be in a loaded team that had a great defense. Yes he made some big plays when it counted but JG did as well.
