98 Vols vs Georgia bulldogs 2022

He got hot a few games, but he never took any games over.
I agree with your overall sentiment, but I've got to nit pick this one line.

Granted USCe was horrible at the time, and we were expected to dominate, but I think Tee setting the NCAA record with 23 straight pass completions counts as taking over.

The national title game against FSU is probably an accurate indicator of how a game between 98 Tennessee and 22 Georgia would go.

That Seminole team and 22 Georgia are very similar. It's amazing to look back and see how many players from that UT-FSU game had long NFL careers.

Vols win it, of course... in a sloppy-looking slugfest with a lot of penalties & turnovers. Great athletes on D create false starts, holding calls, fumbles and picks. It would probably be a frustrating game to watch

Bennett > Rooster

That UGA offense was top 5 in America this year in many categories.
And their defense was elite again.

I think Tee would have had some good runs. But i don't know if Peerless goes for 199 yds.

I think UGA 28-14.
Or maybe 21-20 Tennessee

Who do you think wins? I think the 98 team beats their 22 national title team. Tee is better than Stetson plus I’d take Peerless Price over any of the WR’s on Georgia. I think our RB’s our better too. Travis Stephens, Travis Henry. Shawn Bryson and Jamal Lewis need I say more and Al Wilson simply put our 98 team had more impact players and would beat Georgia’s most recent national title team.

Good thread!

I still wonder about
1998 UT vs 1997 Nebraska 🤔...

I don’t wholly disagree other than I always thought the game was so beyond a mismatch that it wasn’t him as much as it was the whole team. But, he was great and definitely dominated that game.

The ‘98 team was very underrated. Look at the # of pro bowls off that team. Plus, they lost their best player, Jamal Lewis 5 games in the season.

You also can’t compare schedules. Tennessee played a great schedule in 1998 @ Big East Champ Syracuse(Donavan McNabb), Florida @georgia, @ Auburn vs Alabama vs Ark along with SECCG vs Miss St. Georgia played a very weak schedule this yr.

We'd get trucked. Does everyone not realize the jumps in athletics in the last 20 years?

That was the COVID year though, that whole year was an asterisk.

Doesn’t take away from the fact that that Bama team was one of the best teams we have ever seen. An argument could be made head they played a regular schedule they would have been the greatest team of all time.

I would disagree because COVID effected the way teams were able to practice, far beyond what was normal in terms of injuries and regular attrition. Large numbers of players would be "contact traced" (or opt out) out of practice and games, there were no real road environments, etc. They are the best team that played in the midst of that world-wide pandemic (perhaps because Bama institutionally was willing to flaunt those rules more than anyone else) but I really don't think you can say much else, the year was just too different from every other year to fairly compare it's champion to any other. Again, I give them credit for being the best that year, but the whole year is an asterisk, including it's CFB national champion.

Tough question, they were both very good teams. I think if you take away the 20 years of strategy advancement and the difference in rule changes, it could be a close game.

A strong argument could be made for picking either team. I think if GA wins there is a good chance they win bc of the play of TEs Bowers and Washington as receivers and as blockers. They are both huge problems for any defense. I think if TN wins there is a good chance they win bc they get aggressive getting after the QB.

In truth it’s hard for me to judge. While I’m very familiar with GA 2022, I’m not as sure about TN 98. I watched TN play often that year and remember them being very good, but I’m not sure of the areas where they were strongest. I was just a kid in 98 and I’m not sure I’m remembering with a high degree of accuracy.

I’ll go with GA winning just bc I know they had a very good offense and a pretty dominant defense. It’s certainly a debatable question though. I’m guessing it might be a lower scoring slugfest type of game.

OK, guys and gals, listen up. To solve these "what if" games issue, I offer this solution. Get hold of Dr. Ann MacGregor. Have her send Tony Newman and Doug Phillips, on one more mission, a multi-facet one this time. A mission to escort and transport these teams to our era, and play the hypothetical games discussed here. Under the rules that existed in their eras. Sure, it'll cost us gullible taxpayers, but here, we're VN, so logic doesn't apply to us. Rev the tunnel up, Doc., for one more grand adventure!!!!!

I just love helping out my fellow Vols fans.

I'm glad to see the VolDawgs showed up to defend uga's honor. It's touching, actually. And I'm sure that whiny fanbase sure does value your support. In fact, they CRAVE it! :)

I agree with the poster that held 1995 NU as the GOAT. I've never seen a more completely dominant team. Truly the best in my lifetime.

Lol. Posters like you are both childish and pathetic. So if a Vol fan gives credit to UGA for their success, then they are VolDawgs. Give credit to ANY other team means you are a fan of that team right? Are you 12 years old?

Adults can give credit where it’s due and still love the Vols. Guess you can’t. Hopefully when you grow up things will become easier for you.

1995 Nebraska is the greatest college football team I have ever seen. That Florida team they destroyed was really, really good. Nebraska made them look like the Little Sisters of the Poor.

I think VolinNW had a dear relative kidnapped by a UGA fan with a mullet and a tank top in Gatlinburg in the Mid-80's or something. His last memory is seeing this cousin stuffed in the trunk of the Dwag's Camaro with electrical tape over his/her mouth. His hatred of them is unmatched, it's primal.

Yep, I can make no argument against 95 Nebraska being at the top of the GOAT list. They demolished everyone they faced. And as @unfrozencvmanvol stated, they absolutely destroyed a very good UF team. Damn, it was hard for me to type very good and UF in the same sentence😂. They were very good in the mid 90s though.
