OK guys, here is my question.....One of my friends and I were having a debate on this and I just wanted your thoughts

I know when we lost to Memphis the ONE time it happened that it was HUGE loss, cost us a shot at the National Championship and all that....I know it was an unexpected loss, I was only 6 or 7 at the time so I don't remember much about what it was like other than it was a SHOCKER

Anyhow, my buddy and I arguing over which loss was more shocking....That 1996 Memphis game or the 08 Wyoming game....I know that as badly as we played last year we all didn't expect to lose that game, just as the Memphis game...My buddy argues that because we were already having a losing season that loss to Wyoming "didn't matter" and that loss to Memphis was huge because it kept us from going to the NC...In other words, he kind of said it was acceptable to lose to a team you're supposed to kill if you aren't in the NC hunt

The gist of his argument is that he would rather not go to a bowl game at all than go to a crappy bowl game...I say any bowl game is better than none, not trying to open up a can of worms but what are some of your thoughts?

even though i was only 4 during the memphis loss, there is no doubt that the memphis loss was worse. I didn't even care about the wyoming game last year and just shrugged my shoulders hearing the loss on the radio.

I would say the Memphis lose was worse. Like you said it cost us a shot at a NC. Last year, nothing was a surprise.

Memphis loss hands down. Anytime a loss costs you a NC appearance hurts more than losing to a nobody during a losing season.

Memphis turned out to be a costly loss. Cost us the chance to play for the national championship. Hands down, the Memphis State game.

Wyoming was just pathetic (what wasn't pathetic last season?). But it's not like we were going anywhere besides Shreveport even if we had won.

I think that 96 Tiger high game was the worst I have ever felt as a Tenn fan. It was the first time I remember thinking Phil was not a good coach. That team was loaded with talent on both sides of the ball. There is no way our current staff ever loses a game with that kind of talent differential.:cray:

We were a broken team with a fired coach and barely anything left to play for when we lost to Wyoming. Is it embarrassing? I guess a little bit, but it was such a bad season already that it wasn't particularly shocking.

Honestly, losing to UCLA last year bothered me far far more than losing to Wyoming did.

It's not that losing to a team you're supposed to kill is acceptable, but in 2008, we were just lousy. We weren't going to "kill" anyone anyway. I would say losing to Memphis, given how good we were, was horrendous. Losing to Wyoming was an annoyance.

i think last year, a bowl game would've simply delayed the inevitable. I was actually glad we didn't make a bowl game last year. Another month of practice under Fulmer's staff, I would argue (and some would agree), would have actually hampered our guys' development. It would've felt like a "month long" break-up and been awkward to the team at best, in my opinion. I remember vividly the loss to Memphis, and it was much, much worse. And oh by the way, I was at the wyoming game last year-as shocking and disappointing as it was, it paved the way for Kiffin to come in. Most would agree we're much better off with this staff.

I was a Junior in HS in 96. Losing is never acceptable even though it happens. But the Memphis game for sure. I was there for that. The drive home was silent.

and had there been instant replay then, Memphis' return would have been called back. a shame that play won an ESPY for greatest play when it should have never happened

I guess the reason I thought Wyoming was such a shocker to me was because even as bad as last year was, I NEVER would have expected us to lose to that much of an inferior team and I understood the game better now than I did back then...I think they are comprable schools but the losses aren't comprable, that I do realize, I just couldn't couldn't believe my buddy was telling me that he thought just because we were already having such a horrible season that it was OK to lose to a team like Wyoming...That's my beef with it

Memphis.

Wyoming was falling down while slogging your way through a garbage dump.

Memphis was getting mugged on your way to a date with the Prom Queen.

You have a point with the bowl part, but if you had been a little older when the Memphis loss took place, I think you may feel different about it.

As bad as that Wyoming loss was, that Memphis game was terrible. Most everybody was looking foward to the future when the Wyoming game happened.

Yeah, he keeps playing the age card on me....I will say this though, he still thought Phil was a good coach....Oh God.....lol

I'll put it this way, last year I won a gift card from a nice Italian restaurant because of the Wyoming loss. A local radio show has a contest called the Handsome Dan contest which means four callers can pick the game for the upcoming Saturday where the biggest point spread winner gets the prize. I picked Wyoming that week because I knew Tennessee wouldn't cover the point spread but I thought at least they would win. I wasn't surprised they lost however. Also I won again two weeks ago picking Tennessee to have the biggest cover against Alabama. Line was seventeen and they lost by two. I'm getting good at this crap. Oh yeah, I was at the Memphis game and walked out of there in disbelief.

I was at both games. Memphis State loss was more shocking. Wyoming game was a total meltdown...it really indicated the loss of leadership at the top and how the players could not respond to the leadership..Memphis State, that game was an just a good ole fashioned upset.

It made both Wyoming's and Tiger Hi's decades.......
being from West TN made the tiger hi loss even worse.
I was shocked in '96 but not in '08

I will say Memphis no doubt. I was at the game, I was a 7 year old living in Memphis at the time with my face painted orange and white and I cried after we lost that game. The thing that frustrated me the most was that on kevin cobb's kickoff return TD he was practically laying on the ground, got up and ran. missed call and since it was pre-replay we got screwed...

Memphis.

Some mentioned that losing that game cost TENN a chance at a MNC, I disagree on that one. UT was what, #6 in the polls prior to that game in Nov. of '96? Even with a win we were still one game behind in the SEC East and with teams like Arizona St., Ohio State, Florida St. and Florida ahead of us that year, we were not going to to play for a MNC. Although, we would have been in a better bowl than the Citrus bowl against NW and Darnell Autry.
