247 list 9 vols currently in the portal. How is this staff ever going get the roster full with the signing limit of 25? Are we going to be short numbers another season?
Even with the transfers UT would still be over the 85 limit if they signed 25. They will likely not renew the walk on schollies and I’d expect a few more defections. This was a very small senior class.

Once a player enters his name into the portal, the school is NO LONGER responsible for their scholarship. They can be recruited over with ZERO implications. Thats the chance these ypung men take entering. If they decide to come back, they may not have a spot on the team. They know this up front.

Why is Malik Gray in the transfer portal? Does he feel like he is being recruited over? He was a 4* when he came to TN. One would think he has enough skills to see playing time.

By the math, kids will always be transferring out. 25*4=100 and there is a cap at 85. That means there is always friction of 15. If you average it then that is ~4 (15/4). Now it doesn't work by averages and if you presume 85 as the exit of any given year then you can figure it that way. (85/4) ~21 per year and if 21 graduate, then you need 4 extra to leave every year IF your goal is to always sign 25.

Anyway, perspective. 9 is basically double the expected. Not so bad.

Does this mean that CJP and his staff have 9 extra scholarships to hand out for the 2020 signing class?

We only had 3 kids to recently enter the transfer portal. The rest are old news, very old. So old that Maleik Grey played football for a while season at a JUCO.

Seems we are eternally chasing our numbers, like we are on probation or something, when other teams don’t seem to have the numbers issues? Maybe they do and I just don’t follow it

This is something I reiterate over and over. The tradeoff for "allowing" a Student Athlete to transfer from one institution to another is that they better make darn sure they don't want to play at their current School before they jump off into the deep end.

This is the best analogy I can think of... Young man is sitting at the bar with his hot girl but he isn't getting as much playing time as he thought but she does pickup all the tabs when they go out. There is a table full of hotties giving him the flirting come hither eyes at another table. He has the choice to continue to sit with his girl and see if things improve or he can tell her he's got to go check on something( transfer portal). Within her sight he goes over to the other table to chat up the hotties and all the girls say nah we was just messing with you we ain't interested or the one Fugly chick makes him a nice offer but he just cant stoop that low. So now he goes draggin tail back to his table and when he get there his girlfriend has:

A) moved on and got another man sitting with her so he's SOL (replaced with better athlete and don't have a place on the team or a scholly) Fugly is looking better...
B) is willing to overlook his attempt to get some playing time elsewhere and he does have some redeeming factors even if he did try to hook up somewhere else (we need you to continue to be a backup and we can burn a scholly to do it)
C) She's gonna take him back but they are going Dutch from here on out ( he's on the team but he has to pay his own way).

Great analogy. Should help both the players and the schools in the long run. Players being able to go elsewhere when they see they aren't getting the playing time they want (most don't go pro, so playing time would be an important factor, be a benchwarmer on a good team, or be the man on a lesser tier team ) Staffs can openly recruit guys for the positions they either feel they will have to have some turnover and the players playing those positions will be able to see it coming from a mile off, and make their decision accordingly. I just think this will give everyone more transparency once everyone figures it out.

Couldn’t find a position. He’s been at CB, S, WR and maybe even OLB during his time here. Obviously a good athlete, but maybe just not a good football player at this level.

Not NCAA it's an SEC limit.
"13.9.2.3 Limitation on Number of National Letter of Intent/Offer of Financial Aid Signings -- Football. In bowl subdivision football, there shall be an annual limit of 25 on the number of prospective student-athletes who may sign a National Letter of Intent or an institutional offer of financial aid"
":Division 1 FBS teams can give out a maximum of 85 full-ride scholarships to athletes."
The combination of those two quotes from NCAA sources should show that 25 is an NCAA limit and cannot exceed the 85 maximum limit.

3 or 4 EE's, so far, but that could change quickly...some just won't qualify...those will sign in Feb and we go out with a big splash...keeps our name on ESPN and SECN too...the staff will be trying to flip some till the last second...:D

GO BIG ORANGE...BEAT THE HOOSIERS!
