86' Sugar Vols question......

My wife and me along with some friends were some that was stuck in the middle of the crowd in Jackson Square and we could not move in either direction. My wife actually got scared because this went on for a good while and I firmly believe if someone had fallen down they would have been trampled to death or hurt badly.

The big what-if game to me was Florida in the Swamp. Lost 17-10. Robinson had a great game but the Vols couldn’t seem to finish drives. That Florida team was loaded too...really more talented than the Miami team. If Tennessee had found a way to win that game, that Sugar Bowl wins a NC for the Big Orange.
I watched it yesterday and it was a weird game. 3-3 at half. Halftime Defense Adjustments costs us and TR numbers were good but field position killed us. He had a 99 yard TD Drive also.

And made Keith Jackson and the other Ahole announcer eat there words all game!
Frank Broyles. It was a completely amateur performance on his part. He acted like we were a Pee Wee team and whenever we made a good play (which was just about every down) he was overly expressive in his bewilderment of what had just happened.

In the pregame neither gave UT much or any chance of winning. LOL

I had taped the game on one of those old things called a VCR so I could watch it when I got home from New Orleans. I laughed and laughed at the things they both said before kickoff.

I was at that game and as others have noted what stood out was it was like a Vol home game. I have never been in a louder place - most likely because of the dome holding the thunderous cheering from Vol fans inside; also like most I had bought into the hype that Miami was a superior talant and speed-wise. Then Jeff Powell just out ran everyone on their defense on that 3rd qtr dagger to the heart TD and it should have been plain to anyone Miami was more hype than substance. I think Miami beating Notre Dame 55-0 late in the season was what had people thinking they were that much of a superior talent. The final insult for the Miami faithful was with Vols leading 35-7 and basically going the length of the field on running plays to kill the clock, CJM had us take a knee inside the 5 to end the game. Could have easily been 42-7 the Hurricanes were totally gassed.

IIRC Keith Jackson, who could get on your nerves really quickly, did have a memorable statement towards the end of the game..”THERES AN ORANGE MOON SHINING OVER KNOXVILLE TONIGHT “

I was there and UT come out and smacked them in the mouth over and over...It wasn't pretty from Miami's standpoint...They looked outmanned and seriously outplayed...They didn't match up with us at any position...They were lost and confused the entire game...They also had never seen the kind of speed UT had either and it showed...Tim McGee was even and leaving the whole game!

The alleged Miami “speed” difference was a joke. Tennessee ran by them all night at multiple positions both on offense & defense. On defense, Tennessee played the game with both corners out and still dominated their WRs in man coverage.

Where Miami was strong, so was Tennessee. Yeah they had Jerome Brown, etc in DL but Tennessee had Bruce Wilkerson, Harry Galbreath, Daryle Smith & David Douglas all long time NFL players in the OL. McGee was an All American at WR just as good as Irvin.

Penn st played the same defense the next year and beat them again. Testaverde wasn’t very bright and never was able to handle the blitz packages as a collegiate or pro player.
