I am constantly debating with my friend, who graduated from The University of Miami, Fla. He claims that The Hurricanes took UT lightly, and were never able to overcome that fact. He also claims, if the game were played 9 more times, Miami would stomp us, 9 times.
How do you feel about his opinion?
My assessment off the game was pretty simple, and easy to understand, from a former player's viewpoint.
1. Miami's speed advantage WAS NEVER THERE.
2. Failing to move the ball with any consistency, early, Jimmy Johnson pulled out a trick play. Which led to a Hurricane TD. The only TD, I might add.
3. Miami's talent superiority WAS NEVER THERE.
4. Miami's depth advantage WAS NEVER THERE.
5. Even when Testeverde had time(Not very often), he could find no one open.
6. UT sacked the QB 8 times, and three times, with a three-man rush!!!!
7. The Hurricanes were pretty, and soft. No one had ever smacked them in the mouth.
8. Ken Donihue just wasn't gonna let it happen.
9. UT owned the trenches, completely!!

I don't think they wanted to play UT again after that debacle. Beaten in every phase of the game.

We had one common opponent- Florida. Perhaps Miami should have checked that score out. Perhaps they should have realized that only some pathetic last minute coaching on Johnny’s part allowed the PAC-Ten Champion to escape Knoxville with a tie. We beat them by 28 with a back up quarterback. Good thing for them our starter was out.

Just tell him to look at how dominant the SEC has proven to be in the BCS/Playoff era. He's stubbornly holding onto the mindset that used to exist, when a lot of independents and teams from lesser conferences could delude themselves into believing they were better than they were -- just because they could vote their teams to mythical championships every year over superior SEC teams.

Or you could just laugh and tell him well, it's a good thing we only had to beat your ass once, then!

9 out of 10 times Michigan would have beat Appy St

9 out of 10 times USSR would have beat the US in hockey in 1980

remind them what-ifs are a fun game to play when youre butt hurt. Game was played on the field. We won. And they're looking like cry baby b!tches now.

Yeah, that game was such a wonderful surprise win over a highly ranked #2 talented Miami team.
It was such a big win for the TN Vols, to this day, people still talk about it 35 years later. Good times, folks.

One would think that Miami could put forth a better performance.

However, taking Tennessee lightly is a bunch of garbage. Miami was ranked #2. Had Oklahoma beaten Penn State in the Orange Bowl (and they did), Miami would have been the national champion had they beaten Tennessee.

If they weren't ready to play, that's their own fault.

Miami won 4 national titles from 83-91. 3 of them were won playing in the Orange Bowl. Only in 1989, did they win a bowl game outside of Miami with the national title on the line.

1985 lost in New Orleans.
1986 lost in Tempe
1989 won in New Orleans
1992 lost in New Orleans

From 1983-1993 seasons, Miami was 4-0 playing in the Orange Bowl. They were 2-5 in bowl games not played in Miami.

He is in total denial...The 85 team was the best of the 80s. If there had been a playoff we would have won a NC. 2 ties lead UCLA by 16 points with 5 min left and the GA Tech game was tough typical coached JM game he had one a year and it was D. Dickey first game as a starter. In the FL game we came out flat and conservative in the 3rd Qtr. Regardless, this team was the Bomb and the turning point even though we had the1988 disaster.

11/8/2003 Miami, FL
UT 10 Miami 6

11/9/2002 Knoxville, TN
UT 3 Miami 26

1/1/1986 New Orleans, LA - Sugar Bowl
UT 35 Miami 7

That's a home and home and one neutral site game.
UT leads the series 2-1.
Total scores UT 48 Miami 39.

Looks to me like, if they played 10 times, it'd only get worse for Miami.
You can tell your friend preacherwebb said so.

(I know what he means about hypothetically playing the same game 10 times, but that's hypothetical thinking ... I presented facts.)

To be completely honest, and unbiased, I do not think ANYONE could've beaten the Sugar Vols, on that day. Penn State or Oklahoma would've suffered an even worse beating. That defense was foaming at the mouth, to eat them some Testeverde stew!! They chewed him up, and spit him out!!! Their way of saying, "You wouldn't even start, in the SEC, son!!"

In that Sugar Bowl, we beat them in every phase of the game. Maybe they shoulda broughr more fans, cause we beat them in that, too.
I was in the restroom at the half and it was crammed packed full of UT fans and 1 (one) Miami fan. Half drunk UT fan asked that 1 Miami fan..."Did all you Miami fans come here together in a VW Bus?" It broke the restroom up with laughter.

There were at least two buses. I bought a single ticket from the tour operator. 6 double scotches and my smart mouth had the whole section gone at the half. Good times.

I too was in mens room at the half. I pulled off my long underwear top that was under my UT tee, and when I was pulling the tee back on people teased me about changing teams at the half.

Also, they had the biggest hand washing station I had ever seen ... so, we just peed in that.

Good times.😁
