2 penalties for being too loud. The Volunteer fans stormed the liberty bowl and we were loud and rock n vs. Minnesota. Even though this was bowl game, we were still penalized twice for being too loud. After the first penalty we got louder and Minnesota couldn't get a play off the ref's threw another one; Majors was pissed. Minnesota finally called the play and ran it and we never quieted down. I can't recall before or since a team has been penalized in a bowl for the fan's being loud. I mean I know it’s a home game for us but technically it's a neutral field. I thought I would share that little bit of bowl history for some who may not have known or forgotten. Volnation Have a blast and be loud...GO VOLS!!!!:loco:

I sorta remember that game. I was in the end zone and we were chanting "What the hell's a golden gopher" then somebody fired up a hog leg.

They did away with the crowd noise penalty years ago. It used to be that they'd issue a warning and then they could flag the crowd for delay of game. Somewhere along the line, they realized how stupid that was.

The Chiefs were flagged a time or 12 for that penalty in the day.

I have a feeling this is going to be a loud one too, should be a lot of Vols and a lot of excitement about the direction our program is headed.

Thank goodness crowd noise is no longer a penalty.

I was young but I still remember it was a stoopid rule. BTW put a thread out there about bowl games in TN in case anyone is knowledgeable about past games.

i was there...had a blast night before the game as vols lined one side of beale street and gophers lined the other and we hurled some good natured "sportsmanship" at each other. Cops eventually came and dispersed the crowd. Good times.

I say we repeat history on 12-30-10...we will have the full confidence that we cannot be penalized for it. I know LP can get loud as it was ringing with BOOOS a couple of weeks ago when I was there

Yes . . Oddly enough, I remember that halftime show.

Me as well... I sat in one of the end zone areas.

For some reason I seem to recall someone starting a fire in the second half in the upper section around the 50.

It was an encore of his famous half time show from the year before

Interesting side note on the halftime show. I was still in the band for this bowl game and was standing next to Lee Greenwood and the haltime show coordinator during practice. They wanted him to cut out the second verse of the song due to time constraints. I thought he was going to explode! The verse starts "From the lakes of Minnesota to the hills of Tennessee". Guess which one got their way? :)

I remember when he did that verse. Went something like this: "From the lakes of Minnesota..." (8 people clapped), "to the hills of Tennessee" (the stadium damn near exploded). Awesome memory! I had forgotten about the crowd noise penalty. We were rather loud that day.

I was in the POTSMB that year too, playing one of the bass drums. I remember being really disappointed we went to the Liberty Bowl because that meant we got a lower daily meal allowance since we were staying in-state. There was/is a state law setting a lower per diem for trips inside the state. Like it costs less to eat in Memphis or Nashville than it does in Atlanta?!?
