825 3 stars in last 4 years in SEC

I don't think it's because there are more 3 stars and less 5 stars. I think that it's because kids in high school are growing. Those ratings aren't as accurate as some would like to think.

You can't go off of shear number count because the distribution of stars isn't even. The real measure is to look at what percentage of 5 star talent gets drafted to the NFL vs 3 star talent.

I'd bet that it's over 75% of 5* talent getting drafted and about 15% of 3*talent.

Also the worse your coach is at actually coaching then the higher the number of 4 and 5 star talent he needs to succeed. Some coaches are good at coaching up lesser talent. I don't believe Butch is one of those guys. I think he drags talent down.

I reckon it is. I reckon I'm gettin' old. Just that I've learned that being a 3* doesn't guarantee a bust no more than a 5* is a guaranteed home run. They start playing the game on the field instead of paper this season so I believe I'll just sit back and watch.

With the right coaching you can make a 3* into a 5* and with the wrong coaching a 5* becomes a 3*.

Stars mean something for sure but you still have to coach them up right or you ruin them.

5* kids have the talent to succeed. They have proven it. And they don't just wake up one day and forget how to play. But not having the right coaching can ruin them because they are not taught how to manage their talent and fame and focus it into winning at the college level.

Almost every time a highly rated player fails you can point to a coach or coaching staff responsible for the failure.

LSU, Texas, Florida and USC should be in the title hunt every year but they are not. Those 4 states are loaded with talent.

The * system is certainly full of warts. But, I would like to see the better "system" that evaluates recruits BEFORE they step on campus.

Those first three schools have vastly greater success the last decade that Tennessee. Every one of them has played in or won a national title.

USC never gets the talent because South Carolina players go elsewhere to play ball because USC has never been a football powerhouse except for a couple years under Spurrier that was just a dream.

That system isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Look at the % of 5 star talent that gets drafted vs 3 star. It's not even close. Does that mean that 3 star players dont have a chance at the NFL, but I absolutely not, but it's much more of a gamble that you happen to recruit one of them. It is like a shotgun approach to recruiting versus recruiting with laser focus like Alabama.

That's great if you aren't having the attrition Butch has had. That has to stop
At most, Butch should be signing a 19-22 person class. He's losing more to attrition than to graduation and early NFL entry.

There is certainly enough 4 and 5 star talent to make noise. The d line, LB Corp and DBs still have 4 star talent.

A lot of the attrition is due to guys thinking they were going to walk onto campus and start. A lot of Butch's early recruiting was based on early playing time. When these guys didn't get it they walked. Now he's recruiting guys and telling them they will probably be on the bench until their 3rd year. 5* and 4* guys don't want to hear that.

"But what about Bama, they have 5*s waiting to start" yea when you win championships kids will be willing to wait a little longer. Also Bama pays a lot better than we do and football players are treated like kings in Tuscaloosa.

"But look at UGA, they're recruiting 4* players for positions that have returning starters" This happens every time a new head coach takes over. He tells the kids "come to UGA, I know there is someone starting in your position but he was one of Richt's guys, you'll be one of my guys and I want my guys on the field". Don't be surprised when Smart wins 7-8 games next year and around 1/3 of his 2017 recruits transfer or are dismissed during the off season.

The USC he was referring to was Southern Cal. California is the #2 state for top recruits behind Texas. It's the reason Stanford can be a national power and Vandy can't with similar academic requirements

Ah I see. Well throw them in the group as having more success also. And those schools also have intense competition within the state to compete for players. Florida Texas and California have multiple big time football programs and yet those teams have found a way to have success.

It's only a debate because we have a deluded portion of the fan base that will defend anything Butch does. Reality isn't always enjoyable, but denying it begets more of the same.

And we have your portion that will criticize no matter what. I am in the middle. Check my posts. With that said, the recruiting trend is downward and not good.

I wish I knew what trends recruiting up or down. I'm sure winning or competing for a natty helps trend it upward but I've seen teams have a losing record 1 year and have a top 10 recruiting class the next year. But 1 thing I don't understand is how a fanbase can complain about a coaches recruiting classes after they go on a rampage about how they hate the coach, he's on the hot seat, wish he was gone etc etc. ( not saying you've done this, I've just seen it on VN before) recruits want a stable environment to come into and we don't have that yet. This just isn't accurate, but I get what you're saying. I would argue I've already seen what's coming. You've decided to wait for an alternate ending that isn't coming.
