8 Vols assistants reject UT pay cut to help with losses due to covid

Doesn't have to be leaked. It's open information at a public university.

That's true but the narrative KNS is painting is one that is trying to turn the public against the non VFL coaches. Is KNS doing responsible journalism or did someone in the athletic department clue them to take a look at the public records?

They have the same issue at Texas with unpopular coach/assistants refusing pay cuts.

Those that agreed to the paycut are VFLs. That’s telling

loyal
True, Logically, I would say that those who declined the pay cuts don't really have any "skin in the game." In other words, they don't plan on being here (at Tennessee) much longer. They don't really care about the "optics" of the situation.

I'm sure everyone not on contact took a cut. So for these coaches making hundreds of thousands, they refused to sacrifice but let all the secretaries, maintenance staff, support staff, etc making far less either take a cut or lose their jobs. Makes them look like greedy fools to me.

And yes, my pay was cut 20% since April, it was either that or mass layoffs at my company, so I had no issue with the reduction since it saved a lot of jobs, even though it has hurt me personally.

That's the point. None of these coaches will ever miss a meal or a boat payment or a 401k contribution if they pitch in financially and accept a cut. However, every dollar that these coaches keep will necessarily come out of the pockets of someone like a secretary, a janitor, or other non-contract employee who will then struggle even more to get by. Pathetic.

Nobody is “required” to take a voluntary pay cut, sure, but you better be confident in your value-add to your organization and/or market value before refusing to “take one for the team.”

Since all of these guys are scrubs, UT should immediately scour their company phones/email inboxes to find absolutely anything that permits their firing for cause.

Good luck with that. Freeze wrote the book on what not to do as a coach in college football. Most of these, if not all, have read it.

How much did football bring in this year and how much will it next if this staff is brought back? I'll wait
Football season isn't over. No reason for me to make up a number. Go ahead and do your research about what athletic programs bring in money and how much or just deflect to a question that is not able to be answered. Either way is cool with me.

From their perspective it’s probably the other way around. Why give money back to the AD that may very well end up being used for their severance? In a profession where your job security is always tenuous, I don’t blame any of them for not taking a pay cut. Unfortunately that is the world of professional (for them) athletics.

Interesting way to look at it.

They could effectively be paying themselves to fire themselves.

Not really a worthwhile counterpoint... Those employees should not have to take a pay cut to offset the losses from other departments that were not profitable to start with... Nor do they have an obligation to offset losses that the University has accumulated over the years of mismanagement or wasteful spending or pet programs that lose money every single year...

Just because a person's individual ethics predispose them to lean one way or another on a matter, doesn't make it right or wrong... Which is why we have contracts in writing...

For all you know, maybe some of these people that are declining pay cuts are contributing significant amounts of personal income to local shelters and food banks... Maybe they've taken on greater responsibilities caring for members outside of their immediate family...

Let's not make moral judgements on these individuals one way or another without ALL of the facts and context... To do so would be unethical... And you seem big on that...

Howie, I understand your point, but I must ask, are you a betting man?;)

I highly doubt there's a straight connection subtracting a $ from a coach and it going directly to a custodial-worker wage slave. Don't forget, the same AD that can't do anything else right is also in charge of finances. The AD will most likely waste the "savings" of all these wage cuts on something frivolous anyway.

Have no idea. I just take the information as it is and also answered the question. I agree that it's not a huge deal if we were 4-2.

It shows they only care about themselves. Never mind the country is suffering thru financial hardships. Selfish bastards. Look at who did take a pay cut. The rest can take a hike.

Come on man, if we're going to have a conversation at least be honest here. The University is hemorrhaging money over there

I guess I feel differently. If I was making 1.6 million as Chaney is I think I could take a pay cut and not be upset. Just shows they don’t really care about the university or the athletic department only about themselves.
Yep Chaney is fat slop and should take a cut .

Maybe Pruitt thinks this will make it harder to buy him out if the University is cash strapped and told the other coaches not to take a cut as well.....kinds bad to think that, but it could be the case.
