8 Team Playoffs

I think the Big XII won't survive the next round of rights negotiations, the remaining 4 conferences will all get a guaranteed spot, and it will stay at 4 for at least a few decades.
The Big 12 will be fine as long as they have Texas and Oklahoma. If those two bolt all bets are off.

Still 4 teams but two teams play for the 4th spot. Therefore there actually would be a chance for all 5 conference champs to be part of the playoff. Of course not the case this year, it would have been Oklahoma vs Georgia. Winner gets in and would have still a good layoff before playing the #1 team. Those two teams playing for the 4th spot would play the weekend after the championship weekend. Play the prime time night game after the Army/Navy game.

It was just a thought. Just spitballing an idea, I'm not sure it should be expanded but if they do I was just thinking out loud. I don't claim to be a smart man lol. No offense intended buddy. What do think about it I respect you as a poster one of the few sane one's on here. I like tossing ideas back and forth.I enjoy comparing notes with someone that doesn't try and be a prick like some of the posters on here
No worries man and thanks. I enjoy it as well. Im also one of the few that would like to see ucf in too.

I see both sides of this argument. They've beaten everyone they've played, but there's no way they have less than 3 losses playing our schedule.

I believe the group of 5 need their own playoff and to be their own division.
I agree with the last part.

They beat Auburn last year. The one thing I hate about CFB is that only about half the league is even eligible to win a NC.
Thats why id like to see an avenue where everyone has a chance. There needs to be 5 conferences and the winners of all conferences play, along with one at large.

you don't like to look anything up for yourself ? ...... lol
coaches like David Shaw, Scott Frost, Mike Leach and many more ... plus many sportswriters and commentators on ESPN have expressed that they would like an expansion.

Of course, these bast..ds would - it would be mean more advertising revenue for these greedy bast..ds. Plus they'd have their smug-mugs on TV longer. Of course they would.

Part of the issue is they never allow teams outside of the Power 5 in though. Honestly I don't see a team like UCF winning it but I think they're far better than Norte Dame. Hell I could see Ohio state or Georgia definitely giving Bama or Clemson a scare.

UGA gave Bama more than a scare. UGA controlled the game for over 3 quarters and if not for Kirby making some ill advised calls and a missed FG, UGA would have likely knocked Bama off for the SECG. And to hell with ND, they are going to get boat raced by Clemson just as they should have done in the ACC championship game where they belong.

I would like to see them in too, if for nothing else but to see if they can play with the big boys. If they beat LSU I'll be the first to say they belong on the big stage

I’ve said this many times.
There is one fair and right way to do this.
10 FBS conference champs
6 at large berths.

Seed 1-16
Play at lowest seed home until semis and final game.

Jesus it’s so simple.

Each of the Power 5 conferences should add 2 teams to get to 16 total. 4 divisions of 4 teams. the top in each division would play in a conference 4 team playoff. this gives you 20 teams in the power 5. Add 4 team playoff from AAC & Conf USA along with top 2 independants and the MAC and MW West champ and now you have a 32 team playoff.

this year would have looked like this.

ACC
1. Clemson
4. GT

2. Pitt
3. Syracuse

Big 10
1. OSU
4. Penn St

2. Mich
3. Northwestern

Big 12
1. Okla
4. WV

2. Texas
3. Iowa St

SEC
1. Bama
4. LSU

2. UGA
3. Kentucky

Pac 12
1. Washington
4. Utah

2. Washington St
3. Stanford

AAC
1. UCF
4. Temple

2. Memphis
3. Houston

USA
1. UAB
4. FIU

2. Marshall
3. La Tech

Independants & champs
1. ND
4. Buffalo

2. Army
3. Fresno St

winners of each of these games play to determine conference champs and you end up with 8 teams left. Seed them by record and let the winner take all. no one left out, no one complains, you only adding 2 more games to the schedule which most of these teams would play in a bowl game anyway so you are really only adding 1 extra game.

Leave it be unless they drop some regular season games. There's too many games already in the season. Saban is right--play each team in your division and 3 cross divisional games. Plus 1-2 out of conference games. 11 games max. The crap games SEC teams play so they pay some other school money is a joke. I'd rather see TN have a bye week to rest than play ETSU or Western Carolina.

discussion is heating up again to expand the current 4 team college football playoffs to 8 teams and support is growing to make this happen.

is this a good or bad idea ..... whats your opinion ?

I could roll with 6....7 and 8 are usually weak teams

Then the issue will be everybody trying to decide who the top 2 are. Worked out fine this year but it wouldn't most years.

I like 8, 5 conference champs and 3 at large bids.
Oh I see now. This convo is about “how will UT most likely make the playoff with Alabama still lurking?”
In that case, every team with a good shade of orange should make the playoff 😂 🍊
I’m teasing

Yes, very much needed top find the true champion. Too many outsiders looking in. SOS is a factor, but who says a weaker SOS team can't thump Bama? And i'm sick of teams who can't win their conference getting in the playoffs and knocking other teams out who deserve it. Not to mention the media darlings getting dibs. We need a bigger playoff, PERIOD.

8 games would be good so you would hear less teams whining about not making the playoff. The regular season would need to be shortened by at least one game. Cut out the games which are exhibitions like Tennessee vs. ETSU.

Every game is a playoff game. You win, you move on. You win your conference, you move on. You win the play off, you move on.

End up with 6 teams. 5 conference champs +1. Take the two best records from the Independents and group of five and have a play in game for the 6th spot.

1 v 6
2 v 5
3 v 4

Highest seeded team still standing gets a bye/auto berth into the championship game.

System allows for a honest chance for the UCFs to earn a seat at the table.

Doesn't handle the fact that ND had NO extra game vs a top opponent, while UGA, OSU, Mich, Bama, OU, etc all had to deal with this. The system is UNEVEN.

If you have 4 teams, then #5 is mad and "deserves to be in."

If you have 6 teams, then #7 is mad and "deserves to be in."

If you have 8 teams, then #9 is mad and "deserves to be in."

If you have 64 teams, then #65 is mad and "deserves to be in."

Until there is enough evidence to show that they can expand and have entertaining games all throughout, and it makes logistical and financial sense to do so, it won't happen. Adding another round is adding another week to the schedule, which adds more to the student-athletes.

I just don't see them changing for a while. It is what it is. And it's still better than the BCS. There is no perfect system when you have a game like football that requires at least a week turnaround. The CFP cannot be like March Madness, and the season isn't long enough for it to be like the NFL.

I'd love to see it expand, but just don't think it's going to happen for a while.
I personally miss the BCS era. It made the bowl games such as the Sugar, Cotton, Orange, etc feel more important. Now, if your team isn’t one of the 4, it’s kinda like why bother watching? I don’t know if it’s because I had a child now and my free time is sparse, but I don’t feel as connected to college football as I used to. Maybe it’s because I’ve realized my team sucks? Maybe it’s the playoff system? Maybe it’s my personal life? I don’t know where to place the blame..

"one fair and right way to do this."

1) giving TOP seeds BYES...not an even system.
2) at large berths = human subjectivity and more debate
3) G5 teams will NEVER win. Give them their own championship.

My system stated earlier solves all these issues.
