One more thing to note (then I'll shut up), Tino Thomas is not obligated to sign with us. I'm not saying this will come into play, but it should be noted.
Players leave programs before their eligibility is up for a number of reasons (transfer, graduation, NFL draft, quitting football). Greyshirts will be used to keep us at 85. Bottom line, we will sign 24 to 25 in this class.
Currently sitting at 15 commitments with the addition of Tino Thomas in January and possibly Alex Bullard being placed on scholarship next fall, the numbers become even tighter.
As of how it stands today, the Vols will have 71 players on the books next year if no one leaves, meaning there are only 14 spots available
I understand that. You missed what my point was.
The new rule only allows us to sign 25. If we have 26 commits, it means that one of them will not be able to sign. We do not necessarily have to know who will greyshirt in February (although the staff already knows who is greyshirting because this is discussed with recruits). Dooley is going to trim the fat off the roster after this season. Look for a few RS Juniors with degrees to call it quits. Look for some Freshmen, RS Freshmen, Sophomores, and RS Sophomores to transfer. Also expect some academic/"violation of team rules" casualties. However, if a kid is doing everything right on and off the field, his scholarship WILL NOT be yanked.
So hypothetically, If no one quits the team, gets kicked off, or goes pro early, we could only sign 14 next year?
I realize thats highly unlikely, but what if we only lose 3 or 4 to these circumstances. Our class could be under 20 next year?
From OCIVol in the Taylor thread, everyone should read this and just sit back and enjoy!
"I've been told to scale back the info I'm disclosing on the board. With that disclaimer, the staff likes where we are with Autry. There are at least 4 DEs ahead of Taylor that the staff feels like we can get IF we want them (these are not scrubs either). Of the four, two have been mentioned in the recruiting forum. Two are not being mentioned at all. The staff holds some things close to the vest, and it's beginning to get that way in recruiting. Look for some big-time prospects to emerge in January/February. People simply don't realize how well this staff recruits. From the evals to the interaction with the recruits, I've never seen anything like it."
