8-15-16 Practice

The Sports Source said he may be playing Nickel more than saftey. They believe that Abernathy, TKjr and Warrior will be more consistent at Safety.

I see him sliding into the nickel when needed and get plenty of reps at Safety. He will see plenty of opportunities to blitz.

Jones has stated that Gaulden is working ALOT at nickel. After hearing a lot of these reports I'm getting a couple of ideas about the secondary.

Looks like Warrior is ballin enough we can move Gaulden back to nickel. And Maliek is competing outside more. Looks like Martin is also behind Moseley. Hopefully Moseley figures it out and isn't just a practice warrior. Kid does have a lot of potential on the outside.

That position opposite Sutton is gonna be critical this year...

Does anyone know if Tyler Byrd is getting any work on D at corner?

Just depends. The periods all have a time limit and is usually somewhere between 8-10 minutes. However, there are times when the period still has 2 or 3 minutes left and Butch will end it early. On average, we get to see about 4 periods of practice, so maybe about 20-30 minutes worth. But there's usually at least 1 period where he says we can't film. Really, it's just whatever he decides. Just like this past Sunday's practice was supposed to have a few periods open to media, but then sometime last week he decided to close it.

thanks for the response.

Buchanan is running with the 2's. Martin has been mentioned very little this camp.

I don't understand why you guys are struggling with this. Of course I wasn't saying he was recruited over by Moseley.

And no, Martin does not "have NFL written all over him." That's absurd.

I respecfully disagree with you about Martin's NFL prospects. Heard recently from the RTI guys that Martin is among the prospects on the team that the NFL scouts and GMs are most confident/excited about playing in the league. He has all the measurables, all the ability needed.

Doug Mathews echoed their sentiment, but said the potential hang up the coaches have with Martin right now is that he's not shown to be a "3 down/3 play guy".......said he shows up and plays hard and focused for 2 plays but then has a lapse in focus or in effort on the 3rd play, and needs to improve this. Otherwise, Mathews agrees about Martin's ability to play in the NFL.

What about Jack Jones? Haven't heard much on him and I expected him to battle for one of the guard spots

Really liked how he and Chance Hall played in the GA and Bama games last year. I think we finally have depth on the oline and all these guys are going to get a lot of playing time. Lots of fresh legs to mow people down and most have a lot of playing time and experience.

This.

Seems like he's been recruited over.

I think Moseley is more of a practice Warrior and Martin is better in games. Martin will start more games than Moseley this year. Martin showed up a lot more than Moseley last year and didn't give up the big back-breaking play that Moseley seems prone to give up.

Martin still gave up plenty of plays, his effort level has been my biggest concern. i think he will be better than last year, but he wasn't All SEC last year.

Name them?

The only plays I remember him giving up was that TD against Vandy and that 3rd down pass to Ardaruis Stewart on Bama's final drive against us.

Other than that, I don't remember him giving up any big plays.

I thought he was great last year once he got healthy.

Martin is definitely an NFL caliber corner. In fact I've seen him mentioned multiple times as someone who could declare early with a good season. What have you been watching?

One of the elements a team must NOT have to win a national championship is no glaring weaknesses. You can be adequate in a phase of the game and not great and still prevail. Example Saban to this day probably loses sleep over putting a big slow bunch of gorks on his field goal team as he watched Auburn easily return a FG for a long touchdown end of game and ending his NC hopes that season. If we put a FG kicker who routinely hits one of the uprights or misses in game winning situations on the field, that weakness will be exposed during a NC season. If the team and youngster have worked and overcome the weakness, great, if not it will arrive when we least want to see it for team 120 like a ton of bricks IMO.

Well, if I remember correctly, Medley had a good off-season last year, which we all know turned into a somewhat disappointing season. So, maybe this shaky off-season will have the opposite effect on the season. Even though that makes no sense. :loco:

I actually like this move a lot considering Gaulden is a little undersized at safety. Combine that with the fact that he is known for his violent hitting and he will prob have a much longer career at Nickel.
