C’mon midtn, your better than this. We’re talking depth to compete week in and week out in the toughest conference in America, not competing against a lowly Syracuse program. If you wanna throw Arkansas out there as an example, I can buy that. But liberty? Freeze would not fare any better than what we’ve seen out of Heupel. He would probably be on par with what we’re getting now.I sure do. So no one on the staff can develop the remaining 49 players to be a serviceable backup in spots? Thats what you need to be asking. Look at little ol Liberty and coach Freeze. all 2&3 star players that beat an ACC Syracuse last year and just barely lost to Syracuse yesterday by a field goal on the last play of the game. Do you think they cry about the number of players or do they develop them?
Who is the other starter that transferred besides Wanya? EDIT: Never mind...Jahmir JohnsonBoth are woefully short of depth. Here’s the OL situation: 2 starters hit the portal, Calbert lost for the season, Harris is out after a knee scope. Ollie Lane is not an SEC caliber OL, and Dayne Davis is a former walk on. That’s your depth.
oh, and Florida shut down Bama’s offense after the first quarter. They most definitely DO NOT suck.
I’m just gonna say this and take it for what it’s worth. You got to take what the other team gives you. At that point in the game everything had shifted in Florida’s favor.! 4th down percentages are worst than the FG. Kickers percentage. If you want to put that into prospective. If you don’t make the right call at that point...Then when are you ever gonna have faith in your kicker AND your defense at that point.!?!? We had finally got a second half adjustment going and still had to make a 4th down decision. Which at that point I agree coaches decision and was okay with. But not when the second 4th down call was made at there 30 yard line. You put your faith into allllll your players at that point. You kick the FG./ try or play defense. At that point we gained the first ounce of momentum and lost it!!! For pretty much the game and it was over. They went down scored again GAME over ! Never got anything going after that. That one decision was the most crucial call in the game as it turned out. This is what worries me about this sorta play calling type of wide open offenses. They think they can never be stopped. River boat gamblers...Momentum was there’s and we had finally found some and even with one 4th down made. Your at there 30 ty down by 10 points. Yes receiver dropped ball but your not always gonna be in that position. You have to have faith in Alllllll your players not just your offense.! He took the faith out of his kicker and the defense at that point. I’ll finish by saying this old additive to the game of football. Field position is everything and you win in the trenches. Our defense got gashed later in that game by the run. This is the SEC and on the road...You take what they give you and especially at a critical juncture of the game PERIOD! I still have faith in CJH and this team. Go Vols VFLkicker had already missed from that range.
Kicker is less than 50% for his career from that range.
I’m sure the coach knows these things……that’s probably why he went for it
Coach had a good scheme dialed up…..the play simply didn’t work, as the receiver dropped the ball.
That’s not on the coach.
by all means knock the coach on his faults……but come on…..this wasn’t one of them.
It’s interesting. Generally in football the team with less talent wants to slow the game down, chew the clock, and limit the opposition’s scoring opportunities. The idea being that maybe you can get lucky on a drive or two, they get a penalty here or there, the ball bounces your way and all of a sudden you’re in position to score late and win.TOP is hurting us on Defense.
Several hurt. Others buried on depth chart without a path to the field. We simply don’t have any margin for error. The season will be based on how we fight in spite of the obstacles. That may mean we only win 5, but you clowns that think we will lose our next 7 games are dead wrong. There’s too much fight, and too many guys in positions to make plays.
You get it. We hired him really late. We are implementing a new system on both sides of the ball. We didn’t get a full off-season of S&C. There was almost no QB of any consequence available on the transfer market. We are going to have to judge this team on playing hard, playing smart, and competing before the lack of depth limits the chances to win. The Mizz and SC games come along at a good time. Let’s see what happens. The problem with many Tennessee fans is real simple: One portion go about hyping up an unproven team. WGWTFA. Then there are those who are so locked into doom and gloom that they are already looking forward for the next search for a HC.
The truth is this: This team is in transition. Again. And as much as the doom and gloomers want to run about like Chicken Little screaming, "The Sky is Falling", you all need to lighten up. And all the hypers need to take the advice of Aaron Rodgers; R-E-L-A-X. And some of you silly twits keep talking bowl games. Right smack dab in the middle of an NCAA investigation in the program for paying players. Which this brilliant administraion admitted to in order to save a buyout. Even if they become bowl eligible, expect the sanctions to come down. Live in reality. Odds are high that before the bowl invites to come our way? The Vols will be announced to be ineligible for a bowl this year. So, take the prospective bowl invites, and expect the hammer to fall on them. If they somehow by some miracle get a bowl bid? And the administration kissed enough butt so the appearance can be made (an even greater miracle)? Then give me a huge truckload of Hell.
This team is exactly where they should be right now. Not where anyone wants them to be, thanks to another chapter of the Soap Opera that those in power seem obsessed with putting on withn the last year, proving once again there are experts in taking a highly lucerative investment, and turning it into pocket change. Hopefully, by the greatest miracle of them all? They actually got this hire right. But there is no way in Hell we are going to know for sure this year. Hopefully, there will be signs of it soon. And something is going to click. Like TLO said, there is too much fight in these guys. That fight is going to bring about the click. Watch for it. Hope for it. And if it leads to you Wooing in my ear? Have good dental insurance. You are gonna need it.
We moved the ball, especially on the ground. One reason for quick strike offenses is when you can’t sustain a 10-12 play drive. For us, that’s a wild throw, a bad snap, a missed block, a poorly timed penalty, or a dropped pass. That’s generally on lack of players rather than poor coaching. It’s interesting. This faster paced offense doesn’t afford those opportunities. We saw what happened in the second half when we couldn’t convert and uf piled on points. But the first half generally worked with the fast paced offense.![]()
Just because some talking head on TV said 71 players doesn't make him right. Here are the players on scholarship. Tell me the 7 that are not?Granted. But looking forward? I seriously doubt we will be doing any Butch Jones green shirting, or whatever other colors he was wedging in. Despite the transfer rules, Tennessee really needs to retain players at a slightly better level than they have so far. Attrition will happen, a few walk-ons will probably earn scholarships, and that will (knock on wood), and those transfer rules will work for them as well as against them. Sustained stability should be the goal.

Thank you LWSVOL. Great info. We need proper development of these players. Unfortunately that has been a downfall of the last two coaches. Let’s hope is not 3. Having A few extra freshman may be good, but they still need to change their bodies through S&C and taught how yo play at this level before contributing.Just because some talking head on TV said 71 players doesn't make him right.
