7 Thoughts on today's game

Per #7, agreed. But, it is a bit concerning that they have to literally hand him the ball to get him touches. There's something missing as he's struggling off the line of scrimmage on passing plays. For a player to be so potentially dynamic to have only six catches is problematic.

Of course, the offense as a whole has many problems that add to Rogers totals this year but even Neal and Oku have nearly as many catches (both in limited play).

I don't think Stone will be the center, I think you'll see Stone at RT and James move over to LT. I'll say this, I'll give Gooch a chance over the spring and fall to get better. We got to remember this guy was expecting to play another year of JUCO ball and was signed late in the process. I also read where he bulked up way too much and hurt his mobility and quickness. If Gooch isn't the answer I think you'll see another true freshman starting on the line again in Mack Crowder.

Mack will be the center.

Stone, Fulton and James are all locked up also.

Posey will be fighting with some other guys.

It shows how horrifically Fulmer missed in his last two years when you look at our DL and OL. Just pathetic.

I loved the OP

Why does Simms hold onto the ball for sooooooo long? Will we ever put "it" together for 4 quarters?

Yeah, if Simms could learn how to get the ball out faster he would be a pretty solid QB, IMO.

Bray is better now though, and will be better in the future. Hope he starts these last 4 games.

Great post, btw, TV75.

I don't see Posey battling for a starting spot. The only true freshman who could win a starting job is Crowder honestly. I mean we go our tackles locked up, guards, and the only question mark is center.

Bray > Simms....A Heisman trophy winning announcer noticed his intangibles today. Has the sense to know when pressure is coming and he has a cannon.

Plus, he is our future.

I know I'm going to get the "you're stupid for feeling good about a 14 pt. loss statement" but here are my thoughts for the game.

1. If you told me before the game that we gave up 21 pts. off of turnovers, then I probably would've shook my head and say 50-10 or somewhere along those lines.

2. Chaney and Wilcox had very good plans today. People get mad at Chaney for that end around play, but he called it to set a lot of things up. He saw the DE's of South Carolina cheating in the whole game, and burned them about 4 times on that end-around play and set up a little more running room in between the tackles for Poole and Neal. Wilcox I felt had a great plan for USC today. He was dialing it up a lot today and then dropped back into zone. He had a great plan for Alshon today, and you kinda feel bad for him when Alshon's only big play was a 7 yard pass that resulted in 3 missed tackles before he ended up in the end zone.

3. Coach Smith is doing a great job with the D-line. Moving Jackson inside and playing Smith more is really helping this team. Big improvement today from them.

4. I love Chris Walker, but he doesn't have much left. I know he is a senior and has been through a lot, but injuries have taken a toll on him and leave him very ineffective.

5. Gooch is probably the worst offensive linemen I've seen put on a UT uniform. I DVR'd the game and continued replaying plays where he just whiffed on blocks, and if you didn't know any better you would think he was fixing the game because that's how bad he looks. Would not surprise me in the least bit if James Stone is our starting center next week when the coaches see the tape.

6. Bray is just better than Simms. People will look at Simms stats at the point he was yanked, but stats in this case do not tell the whole story. There was not one throw on those big plays that any QB couldn't make. What stands out on Bray compared to Simms is that Simms waits for a player to complete the route before throwing while Bray puts it in the spot where the WR will be when completing the route. Bray's throws are 1-2 seconds there before Simms are. Bray has a combination of height, pocket presence, and arm that I haven't seen since Peyton. I'm not calling him the next Peyton Manning, but he IMO is the most talented QB I've seen at UT since when it comes to those attributes mentioned.

7. We have got to find a way to get the ball in Da'Rick's hands. He looks great with the ball and will be a dominant force for us when he learns how to run routes properly.

Only quibble is that I'd say he's got the best tools since Casey Clausen. He's got some work to do to say he's the best looking since Peyton implying better than Clausen.

Great point. Most people on here want to villify Wilcox, but that play is Exhibit A on what he has had to work with this year. His schemes all year have been solid. Baggett got it right, you can't make bad players good.

No knock on the team this year, it just is what it is. I think Wilcox is going to be special.

Ummmm....Bray's 'tools' are on a whole different level than Clausen. Clausen is actually much more comparable to Simms. Tough competitor that gets by with average physical tools.

Excellent post! Clear, insightfull, and accurate.
However this is Volnation, so it will have to be deleted! :)

Id say you are spot on with almost all of those points. Chaney is still a pretty big question mark though imo. I'm going to reserve final judgement til the season has finished playing out, but right now he has me a little nervous.

i havent posted anything comments yet about the game so here you go. Bray, Jones and Moore kept you guys in the game and i was very impressed with them, and some UT fans are saying it was only 14 points and to your credit your team played 3 good qrts instead of 2 like they have been doing, but please remember SOS shown class not scoring 7 on that last drive, we were on the 10 and could have scored with no problem, we had 2 timeouts and 40 seconds, it could have been 45-24 and even with that score being that dominate our secondary gave up some huge plays that kept you in the game threw the 3rd qrt.

good game and see you next year

Haha. We turned the ball over FOUR times and we still tied late in the game before our very undermanned defense missed several tackles on the Jeffery TD run and then gave into a very strong freshman RB.

sorry man, cant use the "we had 4 turnovers" excuse because that is why we arent 8-0 right now, we would have beat AUB if we wouldnt have turned the ball over 4 times in the 4th and UK for that matter, but we didnt lose by 14-21 points to either team

It can be used to make the point that is being made in this argument. You want to stick your chest out and pound on it about how the score could have been worse. You guys played the most undermanned UT team in a LONG TIME and even though we gave you 4 turnovers USCe never dominated the game until late.
