Felt bad for having to start a thread for this cause im sure i could have found my answers somewhere. Maybe my fellow Vol fans can school me later on in this thread so in the future i dont have to. First of all i've read then heard that Herman is a rs senior and also some say 5th year guy. Secondly what are his chances for a medical year cause if anybody should be rewarded that you would think its him right? GBO

I haven't seen any news on Lathers since the presser. Dooley said it wasn't a big deal. No?

He is supposed to practice today, with a brace and most likely no contact.

It isn't for this year, it is for last year he is trying to get medical red shirt. I'm sure he will probably be back for FL game.

He's missed a lot of time so I hope he gets it if he wants it. He missed all of last year and about half of 2010 if i'm not mistaken.

Hopefully he'll finish the year unscathed and show out enough to get some scouts' attention. If he has the chance to get paid he needs to take it. If not, surely he'll get the extra year.

Am I correct in thinking that either Cottam or Austin Rogers had applied for a 6th season, but after the paperwork was submitted, they decided to leave college anyway???
I can't remember which one though.

Correct, he missed last year because he broke his foot in summer workouts. Him and Tauren lived in the same apartments as I did. I had a conversation with him before the Buffalo game last year and he did say that he was applying for a medical redshirt for another year.

It was Austin Rogers. It ended up being approved but he hung it up anyway.

I think Lathers' request would likely be approved but they don't rule on it until after the season, and even after signing day, many times.

Lets say he does get approved, you think he would want to stay? How much can his body can take? Will he be working on his Ph.D? lol

From what I have seen he will play this weekend in a limited role but should be good to go by fla.

I have no idea if he as applied for a medical redshirt yet but sixth year can only occur if the NCAA rules that the player was held out two years by the same injury. Usually it has been for guys with consistent issues i.e. 2 ligament tears on the same knee requiring 2 surgeries. However the athlete must prove it was not healed from the first surgery.

Also the NCAA is wacky group of people who have been notorious for inconsistent rulings when it comes to injuries. I am not sure though that lathers will be able to get a sixth year bc of the plethora of unfortunate injuries the dude has had. I would love to see him as a captain next year but I doubt it will happen.

I hope the man can parlay his passion and leadership into a role much like inky Johnson once all is said and done.

Seems like (reading between the lines), Lathers and Dooley both acknowledged playing hurt is inevitable and that is where the decision is.

Dooley generalized his statement, but HL specified that he will play hurt and missing the GA St. game is more harmful than helpful. Said he was gonna get fitted with a brace today so he could
Practice.

He never made contact after he felt it slipping, and he took himself out to get it looked at.

Lathers is on borrowed time, I'm afraid. He doesn't sound as optimistic as Dooley. On the one hand, he can play--but it's not going to get better and it was bad enough for him to miss most of the first game. All of which leads me to believe that he'll be leaving the florida game early in the first quarter and be done for season/career. Hard to play football with a bad shoulder. Very much hope I am wrong as we need him.

1. he stands an excellent chance to get a 6th year, if he wants to do that.

2. He cannot apply for a 6th year until after the season so that process can't begin yet which means he doesn't need to decide if eh wants to or not.
