63 Scholarship Players ... What?

I think that's correct.

We had some transfers and lost several guys due to their medical retirements.

Then the SEC limits us to how many recruits we can add every year so we're behind and it will take 2 or 3 years to get back up to full strength.

VFL...GBO!!!

Do we really have only 63 scholarship players like the announcer said
63 healthy scholarship players yes.

And this is where I feel like the NCAA/SEC needs to change the rule. If we lose 10 seniors and can only sign 25, that STILL doesnt get us to 25. I feel like you should be able to sign however many you need to get 85.

The transfer portal has made it where schools have no way to fight back against the roster turnover that's out of their control.

This. I think the total is 71, or something close to that.

Recruiting is now EXTREMELY vital, because you HAVE to hit on 25/25 guys. You cant take projects, you cant take academic risks, you cant take injury prone players. You cant take character risks. Because the fact is, if you sign a guy and he leaves or is booted or whatever, that scholarship is gone. And you cannot get it back to give to someone else.

You can lose 15 guys out of 4 classes. So, every year if you lose 3 guys or more, you're going to be playing short.

It really puts teams at a disadvantage.

The transfer portal could be the answer to filling the extra scholarships. That and Jucos.

Not really, because for every JUCO or Transfer you bring in, they count against the 25. So no, it doesnt. And transfers have to sit a year.

There is no way to win except to bring in 25 guys that contribute and that are going to stick around the program.

Did I hear that right? I had no idea that Tennessee had only 63 players on scholarship. I knew we had a number of players leave the team, a number retire due to medical conditions, a few discipline problems and few transfers but dang, being 22 players short of the 85 limit is ridiculous. Is there some way Tennessee can get back to 85 limit sooner than later?

No, the 63 number came from a recent comment from Pruitt. Pruitt is excluding injured scholarship guys like Gooden and Flowers, and also scholarship guys he doesn’t want to play anymore this year due to redshirt plans. (example: Brandon Johnson)

63 Available:

Injuries: Gooden, Buchanon, Flowers, etc
Transfers waiting til next season: Gibbs, Hill
Reshirts: Brandon Johnson, Lampley, Akporoghene, etc

Transfers, Medical Retirements (Mcbride, Niehaus, etc.) and dismissals (Banks) are the ones that hurt more.

The redshirts are available to play, he just chooses not to play them. Also, you can sign 28 per year, not 25. The SEC rule is 28 December to May each year. Alabama and A&M signed 27 each after the spring signing period. Not sure how they pulled it off, but Ole Miss signed 31.

Right after the Bama game Pruitt stated that he will whoop em when he gets our #’s up to 85. This is one heck of a coach and staff
Easy, easy. We just lost to GA State and BYU at home. I'm gonna play the wait and see approach before I jump all in on this staff. They have made a nice turnaround, but let's not forget what has happened.

I counted 77 scholarship players and 11 seniors moving on. So signing a full class of recruits this class should get us right up to a full boat of players.

Sigh. This isn’t the first time this has been cited. We have 76 on scholarship. Gibbs and B Johnson are definitely redshirting. Gooden, Flowers, and possibly Buchanan are out for season with injuries.

The other 8 are likely Freshmen also heading for redshirt or other injured players not able to play last night.

The entire idea was to prevent coaches from running off a bunch of kids after over signing. I also agree about signing any size class you need in order to get to 85. The transfer portal, as you pointed out, is a game changer. Kids aren't willing to sit behind someone else anymore. They'll look to move on to where they can get on the field. Makes building depth very difficult.
