55 yard tight spiral on the money but Dobbs can't throw

I haven't seen any comments on the tight spiral that Dobbs threw on the last play. That was a thing of beauty. He let it go from the 51 yard line and it was caught in the middle of the end zone. I'd say he has a big arm.

That was never really the question. Ball placement was always the question.... and still is at times. He needs to consistently lead receivers rather than throwing behind them.

Case in point is the INT Dobbs threw Saturday. It was short and behind a receiver that had a step. Instead of a big play for UT, it was a momentum changer for UGA.

We all appreciate Dobbs. You have to respect his grittiness in playing through adversity.... but it would be really nice if he didn't have so much self-inflicted adversity.

When your only 2 choices are a 60 yard field goal or a Hail Mary, I'd go with the Hail Mary.

Yes, I think Medley has the leg, but he hasn't been the most clutch in his tenure here.

UT has athletic receivers and anything can happen. I wouldn't call it a gutsy call but the better of the 2 improbable outcomes.

Plus on the road you generally don't want to play for the tie.

Does anybody actually say he can't throw? He definitely has an arm and that ball was a thing of beauty. His problem is his inconsistent accuracy. He's a very good QB in many ways but that is his weak point. It's OK to acknowledge that and appreciate him at the same time. I'm glad he's our QB.

Debord apparently thought he had a 3rd option according to some reports. Glad Butch over ruled him on that one but had that worked we would be having the same conversation we are today.

In Dobbs' defense, on the prior play he took a helmet to helmet shot running out of bounds. It should've been flagged. I'm pretty sure he had some cobwebs and was surprised he didn't have a concussion.

Are you referring to a lateral play? That would have been a much distant 3rd. Too many chances for a penalty against the O.

With a Hail Mary you're hoping for a catch, tip & a catch, or a penalty....which rarely gets called.

I would at yelled at him for going for a a 60 yard FG with a kicker whos long is more than 10 yards less than that.

Agree. Field goal attempt never should've even been considered and by all accounts, good on Butch for not only not considering it, but also for overruling the idea of a shorter pass with a bunch laterals. He made the right call, it worked and Butch is to be commended for it IMO.

Jones has done a great job off the field in rebuilding the program and we've all said that numerous times. I think we're also beginning to see him grow on the field.

Nobody, no coach is perfect, but he's done an outstanding job this year keeping this team together, making adjustments late and leading this team to wins.

For me, his words about how Knoxville is his home and how much he wants to win for the fans last week after Florida and then his emotional response after Jennings caught that pass this week vs Georgia.....he's completely changed my perception of him and my willingness to criticize some of the things he's done and said that, quite honestly, I've allowed to annoy the hell out of me the last two seasons.

Kudos to Butch Jones for the outstanding job he's done and continues to do with the program I live and die for as a lifelong fan.

Love Josh Dobbs, kid is a playmaker and a hell of a QB and competitor....and that pass was absolutely perfect.

I said last year Dobbs and Watson were essentially clones and folks jumped all over me.

Good to see others are beginning to see this.

You are back on the bandwagon after your meltdown?

Welcome back.

BTW, how many people here cited racism as the root cause of your defection? You should remember that going forward.

Not sure about that. Tee had that SC game where he completed like 23 passes in a row. The incompletion came late on the game. Do you really see JD throwing 23 straight completions?

He's absolutely much better than Tee ever was IMO. Stop fixating on one outlier game in Martin's career and look at the full body of work. Tee was essentially a 54% passer during his career at Tennessee. If Tee Martin could complete 23 straight, Joshua Dobbs could complete 23 and more straight, that much is for certain. With all due respect to Martin, I'd take Dobbs over Tee 10 out of 10 times to be my quarterback.

Yeah that's what I'm referring to. I agree 100% on that. I'd have been pissed if we had done that. At least with a Hail Mary you give yourself a shot

It's amazing what a little time to throw and being able to step into a throw will do for any quarterback.

If this argument is true then there is no excuse for him not to be airing it out

Still has a higher probability of happening then a hail mary pass..he has the leg strength amd can make them in practice.

Technically the hail mary was the "gutsy" call.. Thats my point

In my opinion, the Hail Mary was the "only" call. Medley doesn't have the leg to kick a 60 yd FG with accuracy in a pressure situation. Nothing "gutsy" about the call if you ask me. Medley can't kick the football that far with accuracy. It had to be a Hail Mary & nothing else. Thanks!

I agree as Medley's longest made FG is 47 yds. He longest attempt is 55.

But look at how high that 55yd attempt hit on the upright. It was only 6 inches off. He has the leg. Also, I think Tee played against softer defenses. The defenses now are so much quicker that Dobbs has to face. Tee did throw some good looking deep balls. But Dobbs is a complete package for our team as it is made up now.

If you think that pass is easy, try it. Anytime you are throwing at the strength limit if your arm it is very difficult to control the trajectory and distance. A lot of theses passes come up short or out of bounds. The QB still has to throw it in about a 3 yard circle so his team has the advantage of knowing where it is going to be.

A spot more than an area. Make no mistake.

"They had about four guys in the end zone," Dobbs said. "You know it's coming: it's a Hail Mary at the end of the game. My job as the quarterback is just to give him a chance. Put it in their area by any means necessary. You don't want to take a sack, but get the ball to the end zone and give them a chance."
