This is my first post here, but I've been reading for some time. I graduated at U.T. Knoxville in 1972, and have seen many, many games over the years. I have been through the good years and the bad. I was a student when we went to the Orange, Cotton, and Sugar Bowls when they were the biggest and best available to us. The Rose was a Big 10-Pac 8 matchup.
I sat in the stands and watched us never lose to Alabama and Bear Bryant while I was a student. Of course we had another thorn in our side then, and it was Auburn and the Heisman winner Pat Sullivan. I suffered through the late Battle years, and was thrilled when Majors was hired after watching his Pitt team win it all.
We are now in the same basic mess that we were in 35 years ago. We eventually pulled ourselves, and it was a long pull, out of that mess and once again became relevant.
My point is that our fans have no patience. Many, if not most, had no patience with Majors. He eventually brought us most of the way back, and Fulmer took us across the finish line . He had some luck, but I think that he always had luck. I know that the old saying is that you make your own luck, but between the Syracuse finish, Clint Stoerner's fumble, and Fl. State's quarterback situation, I am not sure how we made that lucky streak happen.
For whatever reason, Dooley seems to have zero luck. I don't know if he is the guy, but I see progress, and I have patience. It comes with age and seeing the ups and downs. Dooley is a smart guy, and he will figure it out. We are not as far away from respectability as you think.
