5 Wide, No Huddle offense

Peyton disagrees about running the ball to win in the SEC...

Considering the only year we won the SEC championship with Manning at the helm was the year Jamal Lewis busted on to the scene with 1,300 plus yards?

Yeah.

Yeah.

Exactly..if he had a running game for the full 43 years, it would have taken alot of pressure off him and we would have had a better chance at a NC.

We had a decent running game in '95 with Jay Graham. 1996 was the year we couldn't run the rock to save our life.

Not sure about that. This is a big assumption that Patterson is on the level of the other 2 WRs we have coming back, but do you see any secondaries that can cover all three of these guys? I honestly do not. We saw all the hype of Mathieu get demolished by Da'Rick when he tried to cover him. Most people assume that is the best nickel in CFB, and he couldn't cover Da'Rick. So who will be able to cover Da'Rick in the slot in the SEC? This is not me drinking the orange kool-aid, I feel like you can bring another perspective to argue against it.

It would certainly be difficult to cover that group. Alabama is going to have an extremely talented, if inexperienced, secondary next year. LSU lost Claiborne, but they are loaded back there as well. And UGA and UF have pretty good DBs.

In the end, I think UT's biggest problem will continue to be against the good front sevens, like Bama and LSU. If UT can't run the ball, and simply tries to spread it around, then the Bama's and LSU's of the world will throw the sink at Bray, and it won't matter how good UT's WRs are. That's the biggest drawback to going 4 and 5 wide, you lose protection. And right now, UT's Oline isn't good enough to go man on man against the best SEC defenses.

Florida did under spurrier but this is also a much better SEC now. We gotta be able to do both. And still play defense against good teams. 5 wide won't work against teams like Bama.

I doubt our only goal is to beat bama... There's really only 2 teams with that good a defense in the SEC... BAMA and LSU... I would be happy next season finishing third behind them if we were a pass happy team.. I'm Not saying I'm complacent with being third.. but 3 is much better than 11.. I honestly think a team like OK st or Oregon probably would of finished 3rd in the SEC this season.. And if either one of them had a decent SEC defense I think they would have a shot a winning the SEC or a NC... ARK is a pass happy team and IMO they have a legit shot at winning the SEC next season..

So the only way to win games is to go to a Big 12/Pac 12 offense, that EVERYONE always says will not work in the SEC??? Is that what I am reading?

Oh yea definitely. I didn't mean that was our goal. Fact is losing to Bama doesn't phase us as much as losing to UF, GA and SC. But me personally I want to beat Ala and UF so bad. Its been forever. Think we beat UF but doubt ala

I can hear Dooley now, "guys we're gonna run the oopty-oop, we're gonna overload the strong side and make em cover Tweeder....I mean Hunter one on one..break!!"

I will have to admit that staying in a three or four wide formation for the most part has been on my mind. We must take advantage of our best players and since we seem to have the possiblity of several studs at WR, a QB who can sling it, and no real stand outs at RB, we would be fools not to IMO.

I love being able to run the ball as much as anyone and I dont see how spreading the defense out is going to hurt our running game compared to what we have been doing.

I'm excited to see what Dooley and this staff can do after coming off of a good season.

I wouldn't say it's the ONLY way. However....we do have the personnel to do it. And it would be exciting to see what Tennessee does with a no-huddle. Only thing that comes to my mind, is aren't no huddles mostly ran by DT quarterbacks? I don't know if I want Bray scrambling. I could be wrong on that.

But, with Rogers, Hunter, Patterson, Bowles, Howard/Croom, I would take that.

Vincent Dallas and the tight ends say hi. There's a certain senior at UT who I don't think will disappear either, at least if he manages to clean the butter off his fingers.

I agree but I think beating FL GA and SC gets us to a better position to recruit a stronger D.. Nobody said we had to pass the ball forever... I would be ok with it for a year or 2 if it helped build us back to a top 10 team though...

You win the SEC with a dominating D-Line. You can throw the ball around all you want to but that only gets you so far. You gotta D it up at some point. 5 wide no huddle would just expose our depth issues on D even further because they will be on the field more, as one would expect the offense time of possession to likely diminish.

if Peyton had just dropped back with no running threat it would have looked like we were playing UF more than once a season. Had we relied on the ground game in some of those vs UF we would have won at least 1 and possibly 2. Spurrier talked Phil out of it

its a lot easier to have a running game when you have a qb that can put up 300-400 yards passing in a game than what we currently have.

Tyler needs to work on his game under center, he needs to be on board with the running game getting better too.

will be the only way we get 8 wins and expose some of these SEC defenses.

Why is it the only way? No faith we will be able to run the ball or just a general statement?

We will have a better running game this year. The line is pretty good and I really think no one taught them the proper way to run block last year. I also think no one taught the backs how to run properly. We may not run all over people, but we should improve enought to keep teams honest so we can throw it all over the place.
