According to Billboard...

Blondie
Pink Floyd
Olivia Newton John
Michael Jackson
Captain and Tennile

Couldn't tell you exactly what I was listening to. That period is cast in something of a chemical haze for me...
*edit. Kansas, ZZ, Boston,Genesis, U2, Elton John, Jackson Browne... would be among them

Blondie is seriously underrated. Wasn't "Rapture" one of the first songs that used rap?

Yeah, but Blondie wasn't really on my radar back then...

In '81 or '82...fuzzy... a carload of us went down to New Orleans to see The Stones with Van Halen and The Doobie Brothers, all together in one big concert at the Superdome. Three absolutely unbelievable days on the road...

Wow - sounds like a real-life "Dazed and Confused."

I'm jealous.

I don't remember what was most popular - some that were emerging at the time were:

REM
The Cure
U2

Lots of New Wave, Alternative and Hardcore like Gang of Four, Circle Jerks, Black Flag, Joy Division (morphing into New Order), Camper Van Beethoven, The Residents, etc.

U2 had a pretty amazing entrance to the world stage. They blew us away the first time we heard what they were doing. My group was hardcore Genesis fans, and we thought we were seeing a new Genesis. Then came Sunday Bloody Sunday, and it was clear they had their own path....

I definitely had my Genesis period, right after my Rush period.

I can still get into Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Nursery Crime, Foxtrot and Selling England by the Pound -- but not like I used to :p

Widespread Panic
Allgood (Music Company)
Rockafellers (aka Jupiter Coyote)
Connells
Drivin & Cryin

I totally spaced on Widespread. That was a signature college band for me too. Damn - all these are blasts from the past. DNC was more high school for me, but Jupiter Coyote and Allgood both played at my college when I was there.

The whole Seconds Out album may be among the best live jam albums ever. Rock in its purest form. Phil's skills as a drummer are often overlooked these days...

I don't listen as much anymore either...

depends on your definition of young......jr high and high school was the whole 80's rock and the start of country pop.....so that would be the likes of bon jovi, def leppard, poison and the like, and the start of garth brooks, brooks and dunn, alan jackson etc...

but do still remember clearly the early 80's new wave stuff.

college, most all have been named.....grunge scene, widespread, dave mathews etc...

We are, apparently, roughly the same age. One of my favorite shows ever was Dave at 328 Performance Hall in Nashville. This group of hippies opened, playing all kinds of tribal instruments, and absolutely lit the place up. The band turned out to be Rusted Root -- and before long, everyone was humming "Send Me On My Way" while walking to class. I was about 6 feet from Dave and can honestly call that one of the most influential moments in my musical development.

V. cool.

Freshman year, first weekend, and there's this big party on-campus that I want to go to, to meet girls. But my hallmates convince me to drive 1.5 hrs. to go hear this band at Salem College instead. I get there, there are about 300 people there, and it's the Dave Matthews Band. Just blew everyone away. I came back an evangelist.

I haven't followed him in recent years, but the early stuff is gold.

I still follow Dave, and the DMB is still my top college band. OAR and Ryan Adams are also very popular where I go to school

Anyone else go to see DMB and Rusted Root at the Electric Ballroom? Had to of been in 95-96 range.

Also kept Cowboy Mouth and Jackopierce pretty close by. Live's mental jewlry and thowing copper were always in the changer.

Different variety of college bands that I loved to see:
Curiosity Shoppe, Super Tyrone, Dean Dollar, Breakfast Club, Mel and the Party Hats

I had forgotten about the Dean Dollar Band. I think we booked him for a party or two at my frat house. There was a guy in Macon, now deceased, named Bob O'dea who played keyboards and sang. He performed as Bob O'dea & Friends and had a regular sunday night show at a place called the Rookery, which was very popular in part because there was not a lot else to do in Maconga on a Sunday night and in part because from 10pm to close you could buy liquor drinks for a dollar. The music was very similar to Super Tyrone, although depending on which freinds showed up I'd say the musicianship in Bob's band was a lot better. 'Brick House' was prety much mandatory in every set. Bob payed at my frat house more times than I can remember, mainly because he'd perform for pretty cheap (sometimes a couple of hundred bucks). He did not have a phone so we'd have to go call some car repair garage where he hung out during daylight hours to contact him. Also, he had to be paid in cash because "The IRS don't know 'bout Bob O'dea". I probably should have included him on my earlier list because, at least at my little college, Bob was star.

Good story. A friend of mine convinced me to go to Arnold's on the strip (aka Flamingo's) to see both Widespread and DMB our Sr year in HS. Neither show was packed but they were incredible. Drivin n Cryin used to play there quite often too.

One of my most memorable shows from college was the Violent Femmes at Sewanee. We heard that they were playing at the annual end of the year event held at Sewanee. We drove down and the venue was a park. The band set up under a picnic table pavillion right on the cement slab. We were about 2 feet from them on the same level. Sewanee provided kegs of beer. The whole thing was free - no one seemed to care that we weren't from there. I even ended up in charge of the keg at some point!

Wow - VF at Sewanee - two groups who know how to party. I bet that was a trip. I've spent many summers working camps on the mountain and love it - it's such a chill place. I'm guessing you went to Vandy or somewhere else in Nashville?
