appreciate the post, and a lot i agree with, some i don't.

i'd only say this....i'd take the 2016 version of Lane Kiffin over the 2009 version in a heartbeat.

Why do you think there is a different version? I fully believe that he is the same turncoat he was in 09.

Does anyone remember the homecoming loss to Rutgers wayyy back before they were even hinting at being any good? 1979 or so? How about Wyoming toward the end of Phillip Fulmer's reign? Getting beat by Kentucky when they had a receiver at QB? Losing to SC was bad, but nowhere NEAR as bad as those losses.

If Butch wanted to suspend him he should've suspended him and not left it up to a player vote because that will cause a rift in the locker room and it will become divided. He gets paid to make tough decisions, not to try and appease people or show favoritism. This is gut check time for Butch. He needs to pull in the reins and steady the team.

Yes. One of Johnny Majors' inexplicable home losses which peppered his tenure.

How about Wyoming toward the end of Phillip Fulmer's reign?
I caught flack about that from folks who hadn't passed a word my way for years.

Getting beat by Kentucky when they had a receiver at QB?
Rock bottom. The silver lining? Dools was outward bound. The end was near.

I'm just not a fan of "winning at all costs" and that's the group think for those that would EVER bring Lane Kiffin back to this university, regardless of capacity. I'll take the Butch Jones that wept and directed the band after Florida over a Lane Kiffin that quit on the very university that gave him the stage to promote himself in the first place.

like i said, not promoting some agenda, and i completetly understand the sentiment regarding Kiffin.

That was the day the EIT exam was offered over on the Ag campus. Had to miss the game to take the exam. You have a good memory. People were walking around earlier that week going "What's a Rutgers?"

that's fine, and i'd expect a vast majority of TN fans to feel the same way..i do on some level as well..can't really argue with you on that.

i just think experience is a very good teacher, and given the failures at TN and USC, and some tutelage in Tuscaloosa....he's far better prepared to be a HC than he was 7, 8, 9 years ago....and he still has the swag, a great offensive mind and recruiting chops to be successful.

now, is he still a giant douche? yeah, probably. but someone will get him, and i think he'll be a lot better now 5-6 years removed from his last debacle as a HC.

x's and o's nor recruiting were his issue....he was a petulant child that was selfish. having now burned bridges in So Cal and East TN, it's certainly possible he's learned what he can, and cant', get a way with in terms of being said douche bag.:eek:lol:

I met members of the Scarlet Knights in an elevator of the Marriott on Canal Street in New Orleans, 1995. They were in town to play Tulane. I was there for a financial industry confab.

Ditto. Not only did Lane Kiffin quit on our university - he quit on his players. Quitting on those young men and breaking promises made to them is far more damaging. It teaches that quitting and going back on your word is OK if it's best for you. I think that is selfish and dishonorable. Sometimes what is really best for you is putting others first.

Overall I thought your original post was 99 percent spot on 44. However, I have to quibble a little bit when you said: "I'm troubled by reports that he allegedly asked the PLAYERS whether or not Jalen Hurd should play in a football game."

The key there is clearly "allegedly." Still, you said you were troubled by an unproven allegation and others have swallowed it whole, some of them disagreeing with that approach and some agreeing.

Personally I am doubtful that Butch would leave that decision up to players. He would absorb their thoughts, but he would make the final call, I believe.

I've been following Tennessee football for 39 years, since Johnny Majors' first year as HC in 1977. I'm an optimist that loves this university and the teams that have battled on the gridiron over that span. I've seen many ups and downs over those 39 years that put the events of this past week in perspective. Here are my thoughts:

1) Coach Butch Jones needs to take control of this football team as a DECISIVE decision-maker. I'm troubled by reports that he allegedly asked the PLAYERS whether or not Jalen Hurd should play in a football game. The last time I checked, HE is being paid to make those decisions, not the players. If the players felt strongly enough to dispute that decision, that's one thing. But to ASK their advice on what to do...is quite another. Can you imagine Jim Harbaugh or Nick Saban doing that?

It is easy to cast stones after the fact. If CBJ had made the decision with the first incident this fan base would have melted down. I personally think CBJ was doing what a coach does, trying to work with a gifted player in hopes of helping him make good decisions and hoping said player would listen to his peers. It didn't happen. I suspect CBJ and the others on the team will be less emphatic the next time a player thinks they are the team.

I would agree except Jalen started to unravel this yarn during the bowl game against Iowa (my understanding). Frankly I would LOVE to see him run out of some form of the old USC or Nebraska power I-formation where he could be a downhill runner behind stronger blocking. However, Jalen signed a letter of intent knowing this wasn't the case. Risk was on him at that point. And I'm not a hater at all. Good luck son.

But to ASK their advice on what to do...is quite another. Can you imagine Jim Harbaugh or Nick Saban doing that?

2) Jalen Hurd is a disgrace. He quit on his teammates and his coaches, so it was time to say goodbye. As talented as he was, my gut tells me that he was poison to that locker room. No player in his right mind screams at his coach during a football game, regardless of the situation. Furthermore, no player wearing the Power T on his helmet should EVER refuse to enter a football game if he is physically able to do so, or because of a dispute with a player or a coach. DO YOUR JOB! SET THE EXAMPLE! BE A LEADER! The NFL was watching. Character matters.

3) We have to win in the trenches to contend for a championship. As much as we want to blame the skill positions of RB and QB for committing turnovers and negative yardage plays, it takes a TEAM EFFORT for this to happen. I've seen what happens when Josh Dobbs has time to make a decision to throw or run. Those guys up front have to play better, or we may find ourselves on the losing end of more SEC games this year.

4) Stop wanting to fire people! The call to fire our coaching staff every time we lose a football game has to stop. We are a spoiled, pretentious fan base at times. Our hunger to win championships sometimes out-flanks the need to build this program back the right way. And...To the fan(s) who sought out Lane Kiffin after the Alabama game to ask him to come back to coach at this university, I say this: Not only NO, but HELL NO! I'll take Butch Jones any day of the week, and again on Saturdays, over Lane Kiffin...Period. Character matters. Al Davis tried to warn us -- remember?

5) Championship Teams Are Spawned From Championship Player-Leaders. Al Wilson, Peyton Manning, Tee Martin, Billy Ratliff, Deion Grant, Jason Witten. Locker room leaders stamp out poison before it becomes poisonous. They motivate, inspire, and demand the best from one another. They call out quitters and either set them adrift or change their outlook for the better. Derek Barnett, Cam Sutton, Alvin Kamara, Josh Dobbs, Todd Kelly Jr.... are their voices being heard?

i'm not going to try and push a "hire lane kiffin" agenda here, so don't misunderstand me.

but i do think someone is going to wind up with him as a HC, and i think he'll be A LOT better on his next go round....and wind up with a pretty darn good program as a result.

I don't think he is HC material. There is more to being a HC than calling X's and O's.

Impossible for me to say, honestly. I cannot "unconvict" him in my stubborn mind, so I do apologize for that. Undoubtedly a great play caller, but I'm not sure I'd want my son playing for him as a HC. Would you?

I can't fault him for leaving because he said USC was the only job he would leave for. It's the manner in which he left.

Whippersnapper.

I saw my first game in 1946, 70 years ago. Back then the team was not as good as the last two years, 2015 & 2016, but the fans were much better. Just didn’t have all these negative guys looking for everything negative they can find and wanting to fire the coaches at the drop of a hat. Back then the sport writers were supportive of the them and the coaches. Th biggest difference is that were not message boards for every Tom, Dick, and Harry to let everyone know that they know more at football than the coaches and the AD. I have been through some good times and some bad times with our/my team. I am excited about the progress the team has made in the last 4 years, especially when compared to the previous 4 years. I am convinced that better teams are coming in the near future and that CBJ will be leading the way. Being the best Conference in the Nation and with many of th best coaches also, progress to the Championship level is very difficult to achieve. We have quality Qbs waiting in the wings which improve the offense along the the increasing experience of the OL and the WRs. We have quality defensive players if they can get well and stay off the injury list. Shoop ill have high quality defenses. Ignore the negative posters and enjoy the ride as it accelerates to the top.

Good stuff. I do question being a spoiled fan base. The fan base created in the past ten years has no reason to be spoiled.
