5 coaches in 11 years

Jones has had MORE than enough time to prove he could "build" a program. The program roster wise is almost back to the point where he started with regard to quality depth and talent.

But to answer you... No. Give Jones an ironclad 10 year contract because stable mediocrity (or worse) under coaches that prove they cannot build nor coach a roster to a championship level is how championship programs are built. Well... maybe 10 years isn't good enough... maybe he needs 20 before anyone questions whether he can coach or not.

Didn't you want to give Dooley more time?

We could do a lot worse than Miles. That's for sure. Not my top choice though.

Nope. I incorrectly argued that people should withhold criticism until after his last year for the sake of recruiting. I even said during the season that he should be fired at the point where it was no longer possible for him to improve over the previous year.

I was WRONG... and have stated so many times. That and my similar defense of Fulmer at the end is why I turned over a new leaf with Jones... and whoever follows him. Trust is earned... not given. I want to see that a coach can coach before giving him support. No more "benefit of the doubt" for guys making $4 million or more per year with contracts that guarantee a golden parachute should they get fired for NOT DOING THEIR JOB.

I am glad he's not your top choice... and while UT might be able to find a worse choice than Miles... I don't think you'd find one among the names talked about on this board. Honestly, Jones probably would have won as much as Miles did with those LSU rosters. The biggest difference in that regard is that Saban left Miles a dream while Jones inherited a really tough situation.

I agree with most of this. The only thing I would say is out of realistic candidates I do think he would be one of our best options. We aren't getting Harbaugh, Kelly, Gruden etc.

I mocked the Grumors last time around but there seem to be a lot of people close enough to Gruden's circle saying it might be real this time not to throw that out as a possibility.

Honestly, he wouldn't be my first choice because I do not think he wants to recruit or grovel in front of HS prima donnas. I also don't think he will want the "babysitter" part of the job. Those things are unfortunate necessities.

I like Brohm. He's not a "known" but he has talent and appears to be a young Petrino without the baggage. I like Fuente. I've warmed up to the idea of Chad Morris. He's taken SMU's O from 11 ppg to 42 ppg in less than 3 years.

I neither like Kelly nor think he would be a good hire for UT. If you are going that route... hire Petrino who has proven he can get it done at multiple programs... or take a shot at Cooter (yes seriously). The guy is brilliant.

There are other names I could live with for sure. But Miles has always done less with more.

Oh, I forgot Franklin. He's the guy I would make say no first. He won at Vandy... no one wins at Vandy. What he's done at PSU is pretty amazing. Likeable? No. But neither are Saban or Meyer. Franklin can coach though and apparently players play hard for him.

I love the Petrino idea. We all have made mistakes. And his bride prolly keeps a pretty close eye on him and whoever he hires as his secretary. The dude can coach.

Anybody know how Miles got the name Mad Hatter?

My thought is let's fire Butch today and let Miles take over so he will at least have three days to get ready for Kentucky. I hate that were sticking with Butch.

You seriously think if Butch was hired and Chip Kelly or Les Miles was hired he'd step in during this season?

This is by far the most important hire in Currie's professional life but is it TN's? Could be. New coach will be the 5th coach in 11 years while only 2 coaches in close to three decades previous. I know people want it, and want it now but is 4 weeks really worth risking the 4-10 years if you rush the hire?

*side note
Every school is different on level of input but make no mistake, EVERY school's big boosters have input/say on candidates and hires. UGA boosters told UGA AD McGarity to get the **** out of the way. McGarity wanted Mullen (was together at Fla), he wasn't even allowed to interview him.

So, when a new coach is named, whether it be Bo Schembechler or Bo Jackson, boosters deserve praise/criticism as much as the AD. Also, keep in mind some idiot started a fireurbanmeyer.com at Fla bc they didn't know who he was at Fla.

Which coach brings stability?

all coaches might be the stabilizer. they all have the potential for failure as well. None are a certain thing..

Because he made some awesome calls on trick plays. The mad hatter came from that and the size of his head makes his hats look very large

Anyone else hearing that Clay Hendrix has been contacted? George Quarles supposedly made the introductions. Package deal could include OC Cronic.

Yeah. But making ridiculous mistakes like Jones has made... except he had so much talent playing for him that he got away with it.

Here we go again. I can just see the stories on line and the talking heads--5 coaches in 11 years! The horror, the horror! They did it when Dooley was fired, hell, I remember they did it when Bill Battle was fired in 76. They ranted about his winning percentage which was enviable unless you subtracted the first three years. What was left was mediocre at best and getting worse by the year. I can put up with their feigned indignation; what I can't put up with is a multi-million dollar coach who can't coach.

You ever get the feeling that not many people realize what is set up in the offseason is pretty much what happens until the next offseason? A week between games, NCAA limited practice time, and classes don't leave much opportunity for real change; and that pretty much excludes anything but an interim head coaching change by juggling staff.

There are a lot of unreal expectations here, but maybe we will see a knight in shining armor come riding in on a unicorn just any day now.
