Beattie Feathers was the only All-Southern/All-SEC UT ever had. He was an All-American. He is in the College Hall of Fame.

He was the 1st 1,000 yard rusher in the NFL. Held the record for most yards per carry in a single season at 8.44. Michael Vick broke that record in 2006.

that is really something, I think the rule is only numbers of our vets. that were killed in action during a war will be retired. I guess because of their ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

That was the standing rule for a while. But that went out the window when we retired Peyton's, Reggie's, and Atkins' numbers a couple of years ago.

He kind of falls between the cracks like Johnny Majors, he was very good at several positions but not a superstar at any one position. In their day they were overshadowed at RB by Jim Brown and Bronko Nagurski.

didn't he later run either the university or was it just the engineering dept? Great man.

And they should have kept it at that. They ruined that honor imo when they retired the other #s a few years ago.

Agreed, once you make a "set of rules" to meet, then those rules are subject to change at the whim of the University. Dying for your country is a hard rule to get around.

I think that was the former rule. I kinda like having the elite retired along with the vets killed in action. I can't imagine any previously retired jersey will be devalued by being retired along side peyton manning, doug atkins and reggie white. I did not know about Beattie until this thread. For that, I am ashamed. It is to bad our university has done so little to memorialize what seems to be a legandary ball player.

You are thinking of Nathan Dougherty, he was the 1st UT player in the Hall of Fame.

He came back to run engineering and the ME building is named for him.

Beattie Feathers became a football coach and baseball coach for Texas Tech after the NFL.

Don't feal bad...I didn't know about him before I made my list for the countdown.

One story I read about him talks about him being in a punter's duel against a Bama kicker. UT won 7-3. Beattie was the one that scored the only touchdown.

That's the problem I have with the whole thing. There are many former players deserving of such an honor. Beattie Feathers, George Cafego, Gene McEver, Hank Lauracela, and Johnny Majors just to name a few. I'd much rather leave the retired numbers to the soldiers who were KIA, and have something like the Dallas ring of honor to recognize great players.

the old school players never get the respect they deserve. You see it every time there is an all-time best list of players at UT posted on this board.

We have to realize that most of the posters on the boards are so young that they have never heard of these players, much less seen any film of them playing.

If you want to read about who I think was the best football player to ever ply at Tennessee, look up Bob Suffridge on Wikipedia. I know you will be impressed.

He was a three time All American and Tennessee did not lose a regular season when he played.
