40 players.. pay attention

"any negative comments about the team after 1.1 of the CJH era is absurd."

So is it absurd to point out that Milton went 7 of 9 passing in the first two possessions then through 4 more completions the rest of the game?

I would say that not being concerned about that stat in particular and its possible implications for the season would border on drinking way too much Kool-Aid.

They were definite positives and improvement from the last edition of TN football, but 4 completions through 3 quarters of football against that level of competition just ain't gonna cut it.

I would like to have seen the other two QBs be given some real time in that game. But hey, I don't get paid to make those decisions.

Go Vols!
JG2 needs to be benched!

A minimum of 300 passing yards attached to the other stats we had against one of the worst teams in the country and I would have been a happy camper. Would not be complaining if we had that.

We ain't gonna be able to run at will on every team. Especially in the SEC which is the best and toughest conference out there btw. Got to be able to pass the ball. Especially on cupcakes.
Week 1.. adjustments will be made

I'm sorry but Theo Jackson was getting picked on. That's different than being everywhere. Rest of it sounds good though.

This team went through a program destroying offseason. We lost 40 players through attrition. We had a laughable offense the last 4 years. This was 1.1 for CJH. New HC, New QB, New culture. For anyone complaining about last night what do you want ?
The only legit takeaways you can have from the game are the following:
1. We played a bad team. Next week vs Pitt is the real test
2. Joe Milton - exactly what I wanted to see for his 1st game in Tennessee Orange. What I would like to see improve from him is (A. Lower the shoulder when running (B. Just a little touch on those deep balls.. I want the 99 mph slant route.. catch the ball.
3. We have no legit Will LB - beasly, Mitchell, page all played. I think Mitchell looked the most athletic out there.
4. Theo Jackson was everywhere -

any negative comments about the team after 1.1 of the CJH era is absurd. 50 would have been nice but understand where we are as a program
See ya in 8 days! Go Vols
Everything you said.. We have basically hit the reset button from the AD to office personnel.. I wonder if these negavols are pissed when their kids weren't drinking coffee and smoking a cigarette 30 minutes after they were born.. Forget the crawling before walking..

Last thing I want to see is any of our qbs "lowering a shoulder". Just get down or get out of bounds.

There is only one real complaint from what I saw. Milton holds the ball too long and looked like a statue. It is a huge warning sign. Some people note the warning sign and proceed cautiously. Other jump off the bridge to preempt the impending doom!!
But wasn’t it nice that he could, instead of running for his life?

After a couple of days to reflect on the game and try not to scream the sky is falling, there are some positive things to work with.
On defense, we stopped the run effectively and never let them establish any kind of rhythm. It was concerning that they got open as often as they did on wheel routes and other medium range passes but that seems like something you can work to correct hopefully.
On offense, they executed the tempo offense well out of the gate. They obviously got thrown out of their rhythm in the second quarter and adjusted to the run game primarily after that because it was working so well. Those are nice adjustments to see from the coaching staff since any kind of adjustments were non existent under Beldar. And when the games count, your first objective is to win the game. They did what they needed to do to win.
Miltons overall play left a lot to be desired unfortunately. I think we had all been fooled into thinking he was going to be really good because he is such a big physical athlete. Especially for a quarterback. We ignored his deficiencies at Michigan. If he was great he wouldn’t have transferred to begin with. I don’t remember a quarterback dropping back and just standing flat footed like he did for several seconds. We all know that is never going to fly when the SEC defenses start coming after him. He will be lucky if he has 3 seconds before they are on him. So he needs to get his internal clock going and get rid of it. Seondly, on his RPO’s, he was pretty timid taking on linebackers who are essentially the same size as him. And lastly, he needs more touch on some of those throws. A thirty yard throw to someone 8 yards away is too JG like.
I still think he can get better at some of these issues. I wouldn’t give up on him yet. But there is also others who are waiting for their chance to do better as well. I think the coaches won’t have an unlimited amount of patience before they try other “adjustments “.

“We’re doomed - going to go 4-8” is absurd.

“Milton has a lot of work to do before the conference season starts” is pretty reasonable. He was a plodding runner and (after the first quarter) an ineffective passer. Heupel has committed to him as QB1 and for now needs to be focused on improving his game not trying out other options. But, objectively looking at what he does in games versus practice is essential - not absurd.

Unfortunately, it will probably be after the FL game before we know for sure whether Milton is likely to be successful.

I remember another QB who completed 9 of 26 passes his first game as a Vol qb. Not saying nor implying Milton is the next Tee Martin. I’m simply offering perspective that guys can vastly improve after the first game. If message boards existed in 98 like today, I wonder what would have been said about Tee after that Syracuse game. Who was the backup that year?

How many of those 40 were or were not on schollie and part of our 85 at the end of last season?
Gooden, Montgomery, Deondre and Kivon without really looking at the list. Gooden hadn’t been on the team in two seasons. Kasim Hill wasn’t scholarship and left before last season.

We’re a summary judgement type fanbase. Burney Veazey is the answer I think.

Are you really equating 1998 Syracuse with 2021 Bowling Green?

Nope. Equating someone can have a really bad game yet get better after the fact. Everyone is ready to write the guy off after his first game. Maybe folks should give it more than one game to decide.
