This team went through a program destroying offseason. We lost 40 players through attrition. We had a laughable offense the last 4 years. This was 1.1 for CJH. New HC, New QB, New culture. For anyone complaining about last night what do you want ?
The only legit takeaways you can have from the game are the following:
1. We played a bad team. Next week vs Pitt is the real test
2. Joe Milton - exactly what I wanted to see for his 1st game in Tennessee Orange. What I would like to see improve from him is (A. Lower the shoulder when running (B. Just a little touch on those deep balls.. I want the 99 mph slant route.. catch the ball.
3. We have no legit Will LB - beasly, Mitchell, page all played. I think Mitchell looked the most athletic out there.
4. Theo Jackson was everywhere -

any negative comments about the team after 1.1 of the CJH era is absurd. 50 would have been nice but understand where we are as a program
See ya in 8 days! Go Vols

I liked what I saw and I like that there is a lot to improve on… they say the most improvement come from week 1 to 2… these coaches showed game one that they are able to adjust and what that meant was going run heavy… we ran for 300+ 2 guys over 100 with TDs… it was hard to really get joe back into a rhythm… he has to improve but I think the coaching staff will improve with the types of plays they want to call… CJH is still learning his team and will improve as well… UT gotta be the only fanbase that complains this hard on a 38-6 victory… DL dominated and I feel that will continue to be a theme of this team… I don’t imagine too many teams are able to run on us with RG as the DL coach… Simmons Butler Thomas baron French Blakey trembly all played a dominant brand of football… We will be just fine I still believe we beat Pitt.

The second quarter cost us…they changed how they were calling plays and did a good job of running plays against how we were lined up. We fixed that in the third quarter.
IF we hadn’t let them dink us to death with short stuff and string together 2 dives of 11 plays each to get their two FGs, then we’re up 28-0 at the half, Hooker and Bailey split the second half and the entire tone on Volnation would be different.

The 40 player thing is overdone. Lot of walk-ons, several who hadn’t even played in two seasons and Emerson/Middleton types who weren’t going to see snaps. Don’t believe me? Where was Aubrey Solomon last night? Also no accounting for the 10 that were added through the portal. 5 actual losses and they were replaceable.

We left about 21 points on the board. If we can clean that up next week we should win

Still an in and out swap of a large amt of players.. it would cost a lot of programs much more. I’m happy to be where we are at

There is only one real complaint from what I saw. Milton holds the ball too long and looked like a statue. It is a huge warning sign. Some people note the warning sign and proceed cautiously. Other jump off the bridge to preempt the impending doom!!

I don’t interpret what I am reading from MOST posters as “negative about the team”. I do read them as concerns about a critical aspect of the game (passing) that needs some work. Overall as a team, I am quite proud of the young men. Hopefully the passing woes will be a short time hiccup. I think there is a fear in some fans based on the last few years that a weakness at the QB position will be allowed to fester indefinitely. I see no reason to assume that CJH will make the same stubborn bone-headed decisions that CJP made when faced with similar issues.

You said it and NO ONE IS PAYING ATTENTION TO IT!!!! "We fixed that in the third quarter"!

For the first time in at least 4 years the VOLS coaches made adjustment at half time, ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL, and the team responded! This CANNOT be overstated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"any negative comments about the team after 1.1 of the CJH era is absurd."

So is it absurd to point out that Milton went 7 of 9 passing in the first two possessions then through 4 more completions the rest of the game?

I would say that not being concerned about that stat in particular and its possible implications for the season would border on drinking way too much Kool-Aid.

They were definite positives and improvement from the last edition of TN football, but 4 completions through 3 quarters of football against that level of competition just ain't gonna cut it.

I would like to have seen the other two QBs be given some real time in that game. But hey, I don't get paid to make those decisions.

Go Vols!

Watched it live in Neyland.

Then watched it on YouTube.

I feel a lot better after watching it on YouTube. I think you could like everything outside of Milton getting confused out there on the RPO's. Should be fixable.

We saw what we wanted to see the first two and a half drives. No one mentions how everything went downhill after the first holding call. Milton had just completed two more passes and we looked well on our way to 21-0 and coasting and that holding call threw us out of our rhythm.

Milton never really got it back after that, which is strange seeing how easy it was for him before that. It looked effortless for him before and that's got to be encouraging in and of itself.

Gotta mention the two Hyatt drops. We maybe feel way better if he catches those. We also had two touchdowns called back on holds before McGrath kicked a field goal. Easily 42-6 if not for those holds. Really left about 20 points on the board.

Otherwise we saw everything else we wanted to see.

We dominated both lines of scrimmage exactly how you'd want and we didn't get to see our best defensive player (Byron Young)

Tempo was good. Running game good. Receivers were open. Defense lined up correctly. Team played with passion. We saw at least one quarter of everything working out perfectly.

Gonna be a long week until Sep. 11th.

I was impressed by the defensive adjustments we made in the 2nd half. Really a nice surprise, and more importantly, they worked.

You could have just said: We played a bad team. Next week against Pitt is the real test. Because last night didn't tell us anything that we really wanted to know. But you are right. See you in 8 days.

Excusing failure isn't more noble than criticizing it honestly and objectively.

I want a team that plays up to its potential each game. I think this team will lose some games even if they do. I think except for two drives the D played as dominant as you would hope even acknowledging the weakness of BGSU. The OL and the run game were pretty good though I would have hoped for some chunk plays.

The passing game simply wasn't good after Milton's first 12 throws. BGSU adjusted and it appeared to just blow his mind. That's not acceptable. Not in the first game or the 100th game. If it were Bama on the other side or even maybe Pitt then OK. But not BGSU. UT should have stomped them into a pulp. It was much more a game than it should have been.

If Milton continues to be that ineffective in finding receivers or they are ineffective in getting open and catching the ball... those run lanes are going to close up. Then we will essentially be back to the O we've seen for the last 4 years with JG. Heupel can't be that patient with Milton.

If Heupel was content with Milton's performance, he would've. He wasn't. More important to work on your starter than your backups.

A minimum of 300 passing yards attached to the other stats we had against one of the worst teams in the country and I would have been a happy camper. Would not be complaining if we had that.

We ain't gonna be able to run at will on every team. Especially in the SEC which is the best and toughest conference out there btw. Got to be able to pass the ball. Especially on cupcakes.
