I was reading about NFL europe http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NFL_Europe

that they introduced a 4 pt field goal for field goals over 50 yds.

Which makes it interesting when a team is down a touchdown it can come back and tie the score by kicking a 3 pt fg and and a 50+ yd field goal for 4 pts. It seemed an interesing rule change. I wonder if they would ever adopt that here.

as long as time wasn't a factor, i think this would not make it more exciting. down by 7 6 minutes to go, and your game plan is to kick two feild goals, one of which would probably only require moving the ball 20-30 yards to get 4 pts?

then you get the ball back, what do you do....go for the 4 ptr or go for an extra 5 yards for the tie from 45 yards out?

doesn't sound appealing to me.

Makes for playing in indoor stadiums essential....who wants this in Chicago or SF?

We do 4pt FG 50 > yards in my fantasy football league. I dont see a problem.
cause it's fantasy....where it belongs.

the game of football, needs no changes to the heart of the game and it's strategies. tweaking rules now and then, fine, like the replay, horse collar rule etc....but when you start affecting the rules that affect the strategies involved in the game, then i say no.

They changed the rules a few years ago to allow 2 pt conversions for extra points, I think it was a good change, it made games closer.

I'm pretty sure that the 2 point conversion has been around for about 50 years.

As for 4 point field goals . . . I'm not a fan of that idea. It devalues a TD.

think of it this way...

1 yd TD = 6 pts
99 yd TD = 6 pts

why should field goals be any different?

hopefully not. if wer'e lucky crap rules like that wont ever float over to America. allvol@15's comment justifies that the game is fine the way it is..

I am gonna go out on a limb here, with all the talk about excessive celebration. Why not just take the points off the board and enforce a penality? I am sure that would keep the showboats in check. I know this doesn't fit this thread but it got me to thinking about the rules and it just slipped out,

When did the pro's get the 2 pt conversion? About 50 years ago? I don't think so.

Taking one pt off the board for personnel fouls would give the refs control of the game, thats for sure.

I was only kidding about conforming it to the fantasy rules. I think it should stay at 3.
A barry Sanders run from 85 yards and a Jim Kelly 1 yard td sneak counts the same. I can not see a kicker getting rewarded for kicking an extra couple yards outside of 49.
