4-2-5

I doubt the 4-2-5 will be our base D. The good thing about this defense is that you can move people around and line up in so many different alignments. In other words it is very easy to disguise blitz and coverage packages. Another positive to the scheme is that it is easily adaptable to any type team. If we are playing a running team we put in a SS who would be more of hybrid LB while rolling or shading another safety to the strong side or the side of the field the opponent favors. If were playing a passing team we can stick with 6 or at times 5 in the box with our best speed in the secondary. 4-2-5 can easily convert into several different defensive packages such as the 4-3, 4-4, and the 4-1 it all depends on what personnel you need on the field. As far as worrying about facing the run out of the run do not fear, against running teams you can simply alternate your personnel to walk hybrids down on the LOS or line them up at LB to increase your number of players in the box. Just look at TCU for the perfect example of the 4-2-5 in perfect execution.

Thanks for all the responses guys!

Upon further review...

Art Evans - probably won't play
Eric Gordon - got banged up last year
Marsalis Teague - got banged up last year
Nyshier Oliver - coming back from injury
Rod Wilks - didn't play much with last year's lack of depth
Janzen Jackson - will he stay out of trouble?
Dontavis Sapp - linebacker?

So does this better explain our DB pursuit?

I think you are forgetting:
Brewer, Waggner, Anderson, Fleming and Meline but point taken. Upgrades to be had.

Tripp good job dumbing it down 4 everyone agreee with you 100 percent a true strong safety what I consider a monter (rover) back keys on the stud of there offense & destroys everything before it happens. This defense was started to shut down the Nebraskas of the mis 1990s it works but you need to have the d-tackles to get it done there in lay the? go big orange

This definitely explains one reason to go after so many guys in the defensive backfield...though a I wouldn't count out a move to the 4-2-5 to get more speed on the field. Oh and Janzen's been out of trouble since his freshman year...just sayin.

I think GoBigOrangeVol is right.. I really think Wilcox will go with a multiple D. It's very weird to be getting all of these Dbs/safeties but having these players being able to move around from Db to Ss to FS to even LB will be great. I loved seein Eric Berry playin in the box and I think if we have better talented Dbs than LBs we gotta do what we gotta do until our D is equal on every front.

I could care less what our "base" D is. The objective is being versatile, when we achieve that we'll be back to where we want to be.

Trip did a good job of describing the 4-2-5 defense. I look for Wilcox to use a lot more varied defensive schemes this year than we saw last year, especially as the season goes along and the new guys get more used to our system. Hopefully, with our 2011 class, we will have more speed and athletic ability in the secondary, at LB, and more size and strength in the D-line next year.

The key to everything, as it was last year, is to quickly bring the D-line up to SEC standards of play. Without a strong D-line, no defensive scheme is going to be good. I think we will have the talent it takes to have a good D-line, but it will be up to Coach Chuck Smith to bring the talent together to form a cohesive D-line that can get the job done. I think that by mid season, we will see a significant improvement in our D-line play, especially if we can sign two of the following 3 D-line prospects: Gabe, Timmy Jernigan and Mickey Johnson. That would improve our D-line rotation tremendously.

It doesn't matter what defense you run imo. What matters is how well the coaching staff aligns the defense to take away the offenses strengths and capitalize on their weaknesses . It is up to our coaches to put our kids in positions to make plays based on film study and breaking down the opponents tendencies. Secondly our personnel is what matters. Simply put we need athletes who are go getters, disciplined, and love to fly to the ball and lay the lumber when they get there.

Our fans don't realize that our secondary sucked. Janzen Jackson is the one good player. Brewer showed some good signs but our CBs suck and the coaches know that.

I believe you gotta have a LB/safety hybrid for the 4-2-5 to be successful. A safety that can cover and come up in run support really makes this D tick. Not sure we have that in Jackson.

Possibly pat Martin as a lb/safety, but I couldn't see him getting on the field that much in 2011...

It allows you to cover the edges better against speed teams and better pass coverage. A little suspect against smashmouth football though.

You need to update this list:

Art Evans - gone
Eric Gordon - backup CB
Marsalis Teague - Possible Starter CB
Naz Oliver - recovering from injury backup CB
Rod Wilks - Transfer
Janzen Jackson - Starter safety
Brent Brewer - Starter safety ?
Prentiss Waggner - Starter CB
Anthony Anderson - Possible Starter CB
Dontavis Sapp - backup safety (red shirt)
Justin Coleman - backup CB (Freshman)
Izauea Lanier - backup CB (Sophomore - JUCO)
CJ Fleming - backup CB (special teams)
Pat Martin - backup safety (Freshman)
Brian Randolph - backup safety or CB (Freshman)
Gilberto Orta - backup safety (Freshman)
Eddrick Loften - Starter safety? (Freshman - Qualify?)

This list of DBs gives CW a whole lot of potential, albeit young, players to fit into the defensive scheme in the secondary. If Loften makes it he should challenge Brewer for one starting safety position. Jackson locks down the other spot. Looks like Waggner will start at one CB. The other CB is up in the air. Lots of players vying for that position. Lanier could be the sleeper here.

If executed it's not easy to run against a 4-2-5. If you have the personnel a 4-2-5 is the ultimate "multiple" defense. You can line up in a 5-2 set, 4-4, 4-3, nickel, exc. You can move guys around and it's difficult to tell where the blitz is coming from. Your safeties are typically hybrid linebackers including a "rover" strong safety type. It can be more difficult to block because you don't know where the player's will line up on any given play and theoretically you have more speed on the field.

Justin Coleman- may start
Izzy Lanier- may start
Brian Randolph- will be a great ST player and get some PT.
Teague- may start
E. Gordon- backup CB
Naz Oliver- depends on his knee where he'll be on the depth chart(wildcard) has a lot of potential if he returns to form

Bumpass plays a 4-2-5 at TCU. They play a strong, weak and free safety. This works well against the spread offenses, but on a run heavy team the strong has to be a hybrid LB or he will be pulled for a LB. Either way, the 4-2-5 is just a variation of a 4-3 depending on the team you are playing. Just like a 3-4, you can disguise blitzes and coverages a bit more than a base 4-3 if you have the hosses up front, that is all.

I spoke with an Vol alum who is a heck of a high school football coach today that told me the same thing. The 4-2-5 with 3 safties and two bigger LB's allows you to use multiple schemes based on the formations and schemes of the offense. It allows you to go with 8 in the box and zone blitz from many directions. I love the plan and the recruiting that the coaches are doing.

Rumor is we are switching to a 2-1-8 base defense to get a little more speed on the field. Apparently the offense is moving to get 8 OL, @ TE's and a QB. CDD has stated publicly is anyone has suggestions on how to run the team he will try them all starting from the first suggestion then moving on. I'm not going to give up my source but he posts on this site under the the initials SGM.
