I'd like to see a 5-3-3 vs gtech when they have a single wideout.

Taylor
Kongbo
Vickers
Mckenzie
Phillips

Kelly/Jumper
Bituli
Dkjr

Warrior
Abernathy/Gaulden

Let me first say, I am not a coach or former player. My football knowledge is VERY limited. That is why I am asking for some insight. I know the formation depends on the opponent, situation, and personnel, but I don't care much for it as a base defense. Especially considering we are going to face some pretty good running teams this year. I just want to hear some opinions from some of you who do have knowledge and experience running and/or playing in different defensive formations.

GT uses it.

That's not a resounding endorsement.

If the Vols are going to more 4-3 this season, who are the three starters at linebackers? I know that Kirkland is set in the Mike but who starts Will and Sam? Elliot Berry is a likely starter as is McDowell, Sapp could start if he's healthy. Imho, linebacker is the biggest concern and challenging position on this team. I'm also concerned about CB but that's an entirely separate matter and discussion.

The 4-2-5 seemed to only work when you have a healthy Jalen Reeves-Mayben, side line to side line tackling machine.

I think any of our defenses would have been better with a healthy JRM. He's a football player and a tackling machine. While the number of injuries depleted us last year, his absence was the real killer.

Dirty little secret is that almost everyone's base defense is a 4-2-5.

The standard 2WR, 2RB, 1TE personnel grouping is damn near dead. More common to see a 2WR, 2TE, 1RB set.

Most teams go 3WR, 4WR more often.

You saw that even from a school like Florida who hasn't been able to throw it at all.

The only schools where I see common, old school standard formations regularly (hat I have seen) is Arkansas and Michigan.

Correct sir. Offenses dictate what defenses are ran. In the age of spread offenses a 4-2-5 is a typical base defense. Going back through history to see what defenses were ran is actually interesting. 4-4, 3-4, 4-3, 4-2-5 have all been prominent defenses depending on the time period. As offenses are always evolving I am curious to see what defenses come back into style or what new base defense may be created.

With so many teams running speed on offense, I like the 4-2-5.

But you have to be deep with quality DBs, and you have to have a dominant front 4. I don't think we have either of those.

From everything i have read or heard if we go to a base 4-3 right now the starting 3 LB's are as follows
Mike - DK Jr/Colton Jumper
Sam - Austin Smith/Elliott Berry
Will - Cortez McDowell/Quarte Sapp

Sapp apparently is pushing for that starting spot. Also I believe there are some special packages being worked on that involve Bituli and Ignont. Look for Shoop to have some very creative player combinations on the field this year if we stay healthy as a team. He has been a master at using various players strengths in situational football in the past.

I'm really curious to see what Shoop comes up with to confuse and stop Ga. Tech.

I just want a WIN and all our players to be healthy before and after that game.

I also hope all our new coaches make a BIG impact in year 1 starting in game 1.

Shoop and his coaches have loads of talent to work with this year and in the future.

I do NOT want to hear Ga. Tech people talking crap about our Vols being another SEC Team they beat!!!

I just have no idea what Shoop might throw at them based on the players we have now.

VFL...GBO!!!

Even with a player like that, you still give up an average of two to three more ypc on the runs. Only time it ever makes sense is if the opposition is playing 4 or 5 wide outs. And nobody in the SEC does much of that.

If Warren gets the secondary covering their own zones, you don't need 5 DBs out there on every down.

not a great fan of 4-2-5 looks more like a nickel defense to me..The base 4-3 is much better in my opinion and you can run a lot of defensive schemes out of it with blitz packages and spy defense..not a great fan of the 3-4 either for us..I remember the nightmare from that experiment...so I hope we do run more 4-3 base this year..I think we are built more for that...GBO

Agree 100 percent on the 4-3! I also love the 3-4 but it takes a good coach to teach it. Hope we see the shoop we went after. to be fair I think we will!
