3rd Week In October - The South's Greatest Rivalry

I was reading this week that back in 1901 ( I think) Bama and Tennessee ended in a tie. The fans were so mad that they ened up in a 200 person brawl after the game on the field. I have been going to the game since the late 70's. I have seen it in Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and Knoxville. Even though there is a strong rivalry, even a hatred among the two fan bases, you will never go to another game where you see Bama and Tennessee fans tailgaiting together, husband and wives (one in crimson and the other in orange), brothers (even twin brothers who are split by the rivalry) and every other combination that one does not see at any other game. I like to get on these boards and make jabs at the competition and have a good time in it all. The real fun is being at the games on Saturday, soaking up the atmosphere and tradition of college football in the South. As much as both sides hate each other, it is that time of year once again, when we do, in fact, love to get together in each other's company and beat up on each other. Thankfully, today the fans keep it in the stands and let the players leave it all on the field. Another fact, more times than not, that we as fans get to witness every year this 3rd Saturday in October. They say throw away the record books in this game, and it is like that anytime two SEC teams get together. Ecspecially, when these two teams take the field. Lets hope that this year is another classic, like so many in the series. I am hoping the Tide can pull it out, but I know the Vols will be there to play. It truely can not get any better than football season in the South!!! Roll Tide!!!!!!

It is all in fun. Let's leave the seriousness to the real problems in the world. If my posts upset anyone, they need to lighten up a little, ya know? I have family and friends, like many of us, in the Middle East. I am not going to act like I do not care if Bama gets beat on Saturday, but as fans, we sometimes lose touch. I see people get bent way too out of shape sometimes. Anything that I post is all in fun. I have friends who are Vol fans, and we have a fun time with it all. The day I start having anything else is the day i find something else to like.

With that being said, I have a TN/ Bama story. This was back in the Bryant/ Majors day like 1979/1980 something like that. the game was in Knoxville and we had seats in the upperdeck up near the VOLS sign. It was thunder and lightning, man I was tripping out up that high with lightning bouncing around the skies. Charlie Daniels played at halftime and Bama won like 27-0, some of you may remember. Anyway, the twins I mentioned in my original post were sitting a couple of rown down and these guys weighed like 3000 lbs a piece. Big youguns. One was in orange and one was in crimson. In the 4th quarter they started fist fightning and were rolling down the bleachers over the top of people. If you have ever been up there in Neyland you know how steep it is, I thought they were going to tumble out of the deck.

When I think of Neyland Stadium, I think of the distinct smell of whisky in the air. How they smuggle all that liquor in the game, I will never know. Tennessee fans like their whisky, lol.

Vol in Atlanta, it seems my post did their job and dug right under your skin. It seems some of that Georgia obnoxiousness has rubbed off on you. Man, that sucks. LOL.

the rivalry has history and hatred yet still some respect, and that's what makes it so good. Bama's UT's main rival as far as I'm concerned, regardless of whatever UF or UGA ever do because of the history between the two as opposed to just the recent events. It's the one game that a win by either side makes the season that much better. It has streaks, thrills, defenses, and even sides dying all the food in their cafeteria orange to get the team sick of the color before the game. I think it might have been casey clausen who said on cbs before the game once that when he came to UT, the one team you were told to beat, the once game that always mattered was that 3rd Saturday in October when you took on bama! Go vols go!

Yeah, it has happened on the 4th in the past also. But it is always 3rd or 4th Saturday. Maybe one day we will play each other the first Saturday in December. I don't know if my heart could take two Bama/ TN games in one year though.

Yeah I think it has been played every 3rd Saturday up until 97 and since then it has been played on the 4th Saturday a few times.

I do not kow how much my heart can take that avatar either. I do hope to run into you in the upper deck Saturday night. :rock:

My wife is a Vol fan and her father is a UT alumni so we have a good nature rivalry going. When we watch the game we always congratulate the winner and say good game and next year we will get you.

The games we love to watch is where we are sitting on the edge of our seats with less the 4:00 to go and it's a 2-3 point game and at the end we get up and say whew that was close..good game.

I hope we have a game like that this weekend:)
