If we stop people on 3rd down, does it change this season and seasons past outcomes?? I say it does, but we won't know about the past and can only hope about the future.

i say yes, if we never allow a 3rd down conversion we win 100% of the time...

Man that is a duh question. Of course it would. It would for everyone. My question is that if we stop teams on 3rd downs would we lose any games!

any numbers on our 3rd down % past few years ? and 4th for that matter... getting off the field has definitely been a problem namely the last 2 years when our offense was actually willing to put points on the board...

If there was one coach I'd love to have a 3rd-and-90 against, it's John Chavis.

With Chavis running the O-zone? You know, that defense with the big hole in the middle?

Yes, because they would stop us and we would let them run back punts.

We always called that the Donut D (hole in the middle).

The reverse would be the Helicopter D (everything in the middle, a bunch of open space on the outside).

You could pick any one of the 3rd downs LSU or Florida picked up against us in 2006 and we win both of those games.

that's bc/ Chavis goes softy on 3rd downs, and goes softy/ prevent when we're ahead.........Chavis is really conservative too.........we need some coaches that are CRAZY, like MILES, instead of negativo, prevent-us-from-winning-jokers

The 3rd downs LSU made all day killed us more than one single call. If we stop them on any one of those plays, we win.

unless they go for it and get it on 4th down. getting the fumble on that last drive would have actually been better than getting the 3rd down stop, it was a sure stop, our ball. blown...

Just looking back on that 2006 LSU game's boxscore, and it was actually worse than I remembered it. Those clowns were 8-13 on 3rd down conversions and 3-3 on 4th down conversions. I didn't realize 1) Les Miles was gambling that often in that game and 2) that we were that bad on 4th down.

ESPN - LSU Tigers vs. Tennessee Volunteers Box Score, November 4 2006 - NCAA College Football

If anything, that makes it even more clear that a missed call on a fumble didn't cost us that game.

with all due respect ras, what are you talking about???
on the last drive that they scored the go ahead touchdown, we caused russell to fumble and recovered it but the call got blown. that would have gave us the ball with under a minute to play, victory formation, game over.
and you essentially made my point for me about stopping them on third down, we didnt stop them on fourth down either...

We'll just have to agree to disagree. Bad calls happen in every game. But how often does a team convert 3 of 3 4th down conversions in a game? I weigh the impact of those 3 plays (plus the 8-13 3rd down conversions) over the course of the first 59 minutes of the game more than I do 1 play/bad call in the closing seconds of the game.

We never should have been put in that position in the first place.

you're right and i do agree, i just throw the fumble in there and that particular game is over. you're right about what you're saying and i'm right about what i'm saying...

not being able to get off the field spelled our demise, ultimately.
the fumble would have got our defense off the field that last drive, true, but a few more stops DURING the game on 3rd or 4th down, maybe the game would have already been in hand.... Better ?
