Has anyone been to a practice or heard if we are running the 34 defense a little more? I know that is probably where we will end up but wanted to see how fast UT's defense moves in that direction.

We are going to a 3-4 or 3-3-5 next year I believe.

Gots ta love the rover.

I'm not a huge 3-3-5 fan for SEC play. But, any defense with solid fundamentals, good schemes, solid tackling, and pressure on the QB will always succeed.

Hope Wilcox doesn't go to this defense again in 2011

3-3-5 is perfect for a 3rd and long, but a first and ten on the fifty gives linemen a better chance getting to the LB's on a run play. To run a 3-3-5 effectively against the run, you have got to have a monster at NT and in the DE positions. Almost Cody-Esq at the NT for sure.

Exactly. And most of the teams run in the SEC anyways. That's why I would be worried if we went 3-3-5 as our base defense.

The 3-5-5 was more successful than our other formations.

I like the 3-3-5. Seeing as it will be hard for us to get 2 great defensive tackles with all the parody and everyone else wants the elite DTs too. I like compensating with more speed across the field. Big linebackers are crucial in this defense though. that is something that is being adressed. Crump, Johnson, Maggitt gonna be some big boys running around.

Well the blitz capabilities are endless in the 335. However, The NT pretty much has to take up 2 A gaps. That is a big fella, or it is a guy that has unmatchable talent and strength. More than likely it would take more than one monster NT because they will be gassed taking on double and triple teams all night long. LB's are generally DE size and weight as you will usually send one from the outside or in a twist. I just don't think UT has got the talent or expertise just yet. I could be way off in left field, but I think they would be better suited for a 3-4 for the time being. They could put more of a rotation at the NT position for now, and the DE (which in our case are former DT's) could play a little more inside. Walls and Malik have adjusted their weight to play more inside or outside of where they originally were recruited for. But, like I said before, I think they are better suited for the 34 for the time being. JMO.

running the nickel mostly.. prolly 70% of the time

will only deviate from it in short yardage and goal line packages IMO

I don't know if we have 3 SEC caliber LBs, let alone 4, unless one or more of these freshmen can make an impact right away.

Outside backers act like DE a good portion of the time anyway.

Jacques could probably play outside in a 3-4, but that's it out of our DEs. I don't think we have the personnel to play 3-4 consistently outside of special situations, but I'm interested to see what Wilcox comes up with.

Maggitt is the perfect 3-4 OLB.

Maggitt is the perfect 3-4 OLB.

he's also a freshman... so like I said earlier, unless one or more of these freshman can make an impact right away, I don't see a 3-4 being more than a situational deal. AJ also looks to be a good 3-4 OLB.

3-4? This is joke, right? I heard we are gonna run significant amount of Nickle, which we already did last year. I have no idea how much knowledge and experience our coaching staff have with 3-4 to implement it as our base defense, let alone we wouldn't have the personnel to do it.

I'm not sure if it is a base D. However, wilcox has a vast knowledge of these types of D because he used them at Boise. However, there will be some sort 3 downline man used in a regular sense.

Thought we were gonna just stick to the 3-3-7 this year? Haha

TBH i'd like to see us run a 4-2-5 .. Not a lot of depth at LB and we deff have enough DB's i think we could pull that off.
