Kills me how these media outlets put all kinds of metrics and past analytics into a box, shake it all up, and at the end of the day are no better than just pulling balls out of a Bingo cage when it comes to preseason rankings.

I work in an industry where we rely on data for a very large majority of our decisions. So most Engineers and Technicians are required to take stats, analysis, and prediction classes. My favorite class instructor always says "Never analyze data too early and you can never have too much data."...so how about we wait and get some kind of data first before we analyze and rank.

The Vols come in at No. 10 in the preseason rankings with a 17.4 rating. FPI gives Tennessee a 38.5% chance to make the College Football Playoff and a 2.3% chance to win the 2025-26 national championship.

Tennessee is the fourth highest rated SEC team in the rankings coming in behind No. 1 Texas, No. 2 Georgia and No. 4 Alabama. The Vols also come in directly ahead of a number of SEC foes including No. 11 Texas A&M, No. 12 LSU, No. 13 Ole Miss and No. 14 Auburn.

There are 11 SEC teams ranked in the top 20 of ESPN’s FPI and Tennessee has matchups against four of them— Georgia, Alabama, Oklahoma and Florida. The Vols’ premier non conference opponent, Syracuse, is not ranked in the top 20.

This page ranks the accuracy of the preseason magazines' conference predictions for 2024, by comparing them to conference finish.

Lower scores indicate more accurate predictions; the lower the score, the closer the predictions were to the actual results. Magazines are sorted by total score for all conferences, with the best predictions (lowest total scores) at the top. The best prediction for each conference/division is highlighted in the list. For information on the scoring method, see the notes file.

Over the past 10 years, a sample of 339 bowl games, the preseason Coaches poll predicted 59.9% of bowl game winners (163-109 with no prediction in 67 games with two unranked teams). The AP poll didn’t do much worse at 58.8% of winners (154-108 with no prediction in 77 games).

To put this in perspective, the team favored by the closing line in the gambling markets won 61.5% of games according to The Prediction Tracker (208-130 with no prediction in one game).

17th feels about right.
Questions at every position on the o-line. QB uncertainty. Play calling has been awful for past two seasons. Lost a lot on D-line and really didn't replace it.
This feels like an 8-4 team. Could play up to 9-3 or fall to 7-5.

If the o-line struggles and QB play is an issue, it could be a long year.
If the o-line gels and we get better than expected play for Aguilar (with better play calling), we could potentially go 9-3

We’d do unspeakable things to the big 12 teams and several of the big ones. Illinois would be over by halftime.
We *nearly* lost to Kentucky, were only up 3 at home against Kentucky with less than 5 minutes to go last year, didn’t exactly boat race Mississippi State. That team just wasn’t one that was capable of boat racing a team with half a pulse. Had to fight and claw for everything.

little better #21 in Athlon. Didnt buy just perused at Barnes and Noble.
I can't imagine how difficult it is for publications like this to keep up with these unlimited transfers in today's game. Used to grab a couple every season, but not anymore. Wonder if Phil Steele has any hair or stomach lining left?

We lost to Kentucky?

Kentucky had a six-play, 75-yard drive, converted a two-point conversion to pull within three, 21-18, with 13:31 remaining.

After punts by each team, Tennessee used a 13-play, 91-yard drive to go back up by double digits, 28-18, with 4:55 to play.

LOL. Seems like we worry about our OL every. Single. Year. Even before the seasons when we lead the SEC in rushing, or go to the playoffs with a freshman QB. Meanwhile ... Syracuse returns how many starters from their offense last year? 🤔

Oh yeah ... one. 🤷

Definitely prefer to be doubted in a season like this. Let them sleep on us. Makes the team angrier and hungrier.

Not sure why some users on this forum get so worked up over it. I want them to rank us #132.

That was a huge typo by me. Meant to say *nearly lost to Kentucky. Otherwise we did only lead by 3 with less than 5 minutes to go.

It’s June. There isn’t anything to talk about. If you don’t care, don’t open the thread. It’s much easier than opening the thread to post about how little you care.

You sure went to a lot of trouble to say nothing.
I enjoy opening these threads because it is entertaining to read some of the very
asinine comments that some of you make.

Good. Write us off. Tell us we shouldn't have gone to the playoffs. Tell us how our star QB tried to shake us down for money and got shown the door. Tell us how many interceptions the new QB will throw. Whatever makes us angry. Whatever works as fuel. Tell Georgia to count this game as a W. Tell Alabama that they'll get their revenge this year. Tell Florida that they are going to get back in the National picture after they beat us. This offseason has been the only time that I, as a fan, actually felt angry about the whole thing. I want to see our guys out there jacking people up. I want to see people getting up looking out their ear hole and blowing snot bubbles. I want them walking to the sidelines and then have to make sure they walked to the correct teams sidelines.
Well hope they get an increase in Pay. You'd need some old school football players for that scenario..

We scored with 4:55 to play, so technically you're right, you can enjoy that but only for 5 seconds. To say we "nearly lost to Kentucky" is simply not true. A 13 play 91 yard drive consuming over 5:14 minutes answer after their 4th quarter score is my indicator. If Omarr hadn't picked a face mask on their 4 and 7 attempt at their 32 we would have got the ball back at 3:51 mark and probably would have scored again. Quit downplaying the season.

Did we boatrace them? I don’t think so. Omar Norman Lott doing something stupid was kinda baked in and not something you can say “well if this hadn’t happened” because it was about as certain as saying Cooper Mays was going to snap the ball at some point during the game.

That team wasn’t in the business of boatracing anyone. Their best wins weren’t boatraces, and some of their worst opponents weren’t boatraced.
