The problem isn't just what we do-- it's how we do it.

We kneejerk and fire a long-term coach with no respect at all, in the public eye, during the season. It needed to be done, but we could have been classy about it. Strike 1.

Then we hire a known jerk, who was fired from his last job and is considered untouchable by most, and put him charge of a respected program for which he has no respect-- all because he has a famous football father that he agrees to bring with him. He vows to make UT-- a storied program in its own right-- Trojans East. Strike 2.

Then when the jerk screws our program and dumps us, taking the entire staff and as many players as he can two weeks before NSD, we panic and make a kneejerk hire on the rebound because-- wait for it-- the new hire has a famous football father. Strike 3.

I'm not saying Dooley can't do it, but hiring him on the fly wasn't the smartest. We have exactly what we hired-- a nice, honorable, eloquent guy with a famous coach for a father and an unproven record of his own. Maybe that will get it done; maybe not.

Writing was on the wall RE Zook and Shula after 3 and 4 years respectively.

Period.

Either we're a Florida and Bama where they went out and got the best coach that would take the job (no matter the pricetag) or we're a program that settles.

Dooley compared to Zook and Shula is like apples and oranges....

Zook got his butt in a jam because he started covering for players.....which cost him his job.....He could recruit in his own state either...

Shula was a legacy and was going to get a shot no matter what....

the argument is that we should be patient not pulling the trigger to get rid of DD. We didnt have patience before but 3 years later and 3 6/7 win seasons (well, hopefully we can find 6 this year) we need to be patient. Before being bowl eligible was a given and 8-9 wins wasnt good enough. Now, being bowl eligible is the year's accomplishment. But we're bowl eligible with patience. I'm right on board with you, captain.

The thing is, if we allow Dooley to get one or two more recruiting classes under his belt, then the cupboard starts to become full again. Once that happens, our HC position becomes much more appealing than when Kiffin left. Turning around a program with SEC caliber players has proven to be a 2 year job at most.

When Dooley was hired it was realistic to think is was going to take 4 or 5 years to restore this program....I think that is the timeline we should be looking at.....Know that zook and shula coached in a different SEC than what it is today....

Dooley knows what to do and how to recruit....Time.

Know that if he is let go or leaves that there is not a line waiting to take this job or that that line is a bunch of wanna bes....However he departs and I hope it is awhile before he does will affect which level of coaches we are able to get....

Right now we are stuck and in a Catch 22....So we have to live with it....period...

IDK if Dooley was a mistake or not. He does bring a lot of positives to the program. He looks the part and he talks the talk, so the sooner he walks the walk, the better it will be. I'm pretty sure he gets four years, unless we just totally screw the pooch this year and next. But people won't be happy about giving it to him. Season tix sales will be down, maybe way down, if we are blown out by LSU and Bama. Losing to UGA, USCe and Arky will hurt. A struggle against Vandy in front of a lot of empty seats will cause the grumbling to get loud.

I'm willing to bet that if we go 5-7 this year, or maybe even 6-6, someone somewhere is putting together a shortlist. Next year, feelers will go out and OTR conversations will be had. Yes, rebuilding and restocking will take time, but the lack of measurable progress, coupled with the loss of revenue and erosion of the fanbase, will be what ultimately heats the seat.

New guy here, 2nd post. I have to agree 100% with OP.

Been a vol fan since Bill Battle was HC and remember well the mediocrity of the early JM days. I remember losing 11 years in a row to Alabama. I remember when Fulmer pushed JM out and was on board with that decision at the time. I also believe Fulmer had over stayed his time and was OK with the decision to look for another coach.

In hindsight I think we may have been better off if we had done more to keep Cutcliffe. I think he has health problems which may be why he seems content coaching at Duke but I think he could have been a more successful successor to Fulmer. Chavis is another one we let get away and who should have gotten more consideration for HC IMHO. At the time it seemed we were looking for that "big name" hire which turned out to be a huge mistake.

So it is what it is, our football program is in a sad state because of some really poor decisions. No reason to cry over spilled milk now and no reason for any knee jerk reactions either. I think the OP spelled things out pretty clearly why DD deserves time and patience and I am on board with that.

Agree. But the shortlist is probably 2 years away when the right people do it....Bray and company will bring the crowds next year and the year after....Buzz will pickup.....for sure...recruiting will be steady....This year will be written off because of youth and injuries....AD is too new to do this...at this point....If we screw this up, we will never get a high caliber coach to come no matter what the price we are willing to pay...

You were right... I don't think anyone could understand what you were saying. Just a bunch of sentences saying stuff.. Sound like a dog with peanut butter stuck to the roof of its mouth...

Evidently you understood it because you got the point and commented....

Good, logical, well thought out post by the OP. Little wonder there are those on here questioning it, or unable to grasp the concepts laid out in the body of his work. Anyone who thought this team was going to compete for the SEC championship this year was dreaming. Too young and still several holes to fill with top quality players. Coach Dooley will get it done, given the time necessary to rebuild. And as originally pointed out, the younger generation does not understand or even want to comprehend the concept of time and patience. I am disappointed that we lost, but I still love the Vols and believe in what Coach Dooley is doing. As for those that keep saying, bring pressure on the qb, you first have to have the ability to do so and how many times did we get to Murray last night? Zero. So, you risk a blitz and leave a hole in the defense and if you don't get him, then you are toast. Pick your poison. I will say that our kicking game is as bad as I have ever seen at UT and that is really sad because that used to be a major priority for the Vols to always win the kicking game. No excuse for a blocked PAT. Palardy just kicked the ball to low. A 31 yard punt is pathetic. Even by high school standards.

IDK what to say honestly before last night, I would've said there is no way Dooley would be on the hot seat. However we have regressed in all three phases on the field. I like Dooley as a person and I think he is repairing some of the damage but I honestly can see him taking us to the promise land. I hope to heck I'm wrong but after next season I think we will have another coaching change. We got beaten by a bad UGA team but we were pathetic on both sides of the ball.

I think we may have internal coaching changes, but not HC changes.....Changes may occur internal at the end of the season, but I don't think so......

Our biggest problem is that we have always had a kitchen sink to throw at anybody on the schedule at any time of the year......Because of the turmoil we don't have one to throw...
This would have been the year if Bray is not hurt to try knew people and to try new defenses and players and go for broke....but we don't have it...it takes time to develop young players and the problem with the development of this group is that we have no upperclassmen to assist in the development of the freshman and sophomores....
Plus we have no kitchen sinks left......

There seems to be a lot of folks on this board that allow themselves to be too optomistic about our team...the "I always excpect to win" crowd, etc. This can be a good quality to have at times, but it works both ways.

I think a lot of these people have set themselves to be utterly disappointed...and when that happens you see the overreacting in the "fire Dooley", "fire Wilcox" etc. threads and posts, even after losing a game we were an underdog in anyway (and that was before our best player was forced out of the game).

Nobody likes to hear this...but it just takes time. Tennessee's talent/depth were in much worse shape than some of the other power programs that have had quicker success with new hires in the past decade or so(Ohio St, Miami, Florida, etc.). This program has been knocked down and rebuilt before, and it's steadily being rebuilt again. The big wins will come eventually.

Oh I didn't expect to win the UGA game honestly. I thought we had a chance because Richt is only a mediocre coach. However, I didn't expect regression in every aspect.

Honestly, are we a better offensive team this year than last year? Are we more sound in the kicking game? Are we a better defensive team?

Hopefully this was just a one game meltdown but there has to be some progression at some point.
