I was living in Neyland Hill Apts overlooking the Fair at the time.

HUGE Fireworks show out my window over the river every night.

Was going to make LOTS of money subletting my place..... Didn't work out.

I lived in Shelbourne Towers at the time...Sure was a fun time to live on campus.

Wasn't there an old Mexican restaurant down in that area back during that time...maybe around Western & Grand? I just remember the smell of that place...very old school.

Just a little west of the L&N tavern. First place I ever had sopapillas with honey.

This mex place I remember, but am struggling to recall where the chinese place was?

LOL…yes I can’t recall the name…I only ate there maybe 100 times….very old school but unique for Knoxville at the time….not a chain, cinder block building, shut down a while because of a fire….great food…

Thanks guys. That has to be the one. I just remember the smell of that place as well as the sopapillas & honey. I was just 8-10 when we would go there.

I remember after the fair was over and a few years had passed, lots of businesses tried to make it work for them, even Hardees attempted to use it but failed. The thing that hurts the sunsphere for a eatery is the elevator, no one wants to wait to go up or come down on a lunch break.

The Butcher brothers had their role in getting the fair to Knoxville but their investors lost their tails along with Jake Butcher.

Was my freshman year at UT! Jeez, just had my 30th HS reunion and now this! :banghead2:

Awesome year though, living in Reese Hall, the worlds Fair, and we beat The Bear which turned out to be his last year. They had to block off the strip after the game!

Ahh to be young again and full of hopes and dreams, before they were trampled and destroyed before my eyes. :)

Shelburn Towers was a rat trap in the 80's. I remember the deli/store on the first floor.

I envy you guys at UT during the fair. I had my 11th birthday at the fair and practically live there with my seasons pass. Bama game was great, NFL exhibition, and some good food. 30 yrs...crazy.

You're telling me the Sunsphere is 30 years old?

I took a series of pix while it was being constructed.

now I feel just a little bit older, thank you very much.

....of course they were with a 35mm and I can't find them much less show them to anyone on VN
