3 SEC Rookie Coaches

Nothing tops what Kiffin did with Crompton, but UT IMO has better players, especially on D. Ill give the slight edge to Mullen, then Chizik closely behind him, then Kiffin.

No way. Auburn has better players across the board than Tennessee does. It's not even close really.

Tennessee has started 4-5 walk on's this year. They've played with only 4 defensive tackles all season. Zero depth on the Oline and at LB.

Going 7-5 with their schedule and the lack of players and talent is nothing short of amazing.

I'd say all 3 did about as expected in the W & L columns. But Kiffin has exceeded recruiting exceptions and generally made this a better football team. We're a better team than our record indicates, and I doubt you could say the same about Auburn or MSU. Our future is also a lot brighter. I expect MSU to get better as Mullen gets players in to fit the system.

1. Kiffin
2. Mullen
3. Cheese Nip

How can anyone seriously NOT give Kiffin the nod over the others when you realize the season started with two walkons starting on the OL most all season? The emergence and use of Stocker & fullbacks in the offensive schemes? How many LBs went down with season ending injuries? UF at the Swamp only got us by 10 points and left the field deflated? Bammer, then some were placing them at #1, could not score a TD against us where we did indeed score a TD against their D? Kiffin has placed the program on the lips of broadcasters and reporters across the country continuously, recall the old saying' about there's no such thing as bad publicity? Kiffin kicks the SEC office rear ends over the horrible and biased officiating prompting a rules change, and then the following week points out Meyer's public comments voilated the new rule to which Meyer was fined? Good grief ya'll, Kiffin is not just the rookie SEC coach of the year, he's the FBS college football coach of the year. Looking forward to the beatdown the Gators will experience fall of 2010 on The Hill.

Mullen has a much tougher job. He has to overcome institutional losing mentality. While Fulmer had us going down that path, we'll never get where MSU is. If Mullen makes anything of that gig, it will be borderline miraculous.

I think that's a bit of an exaggeration. Part of the reason we were so thin in the depth chart is the # of players that were dismissed or left the program prior to the start of the season. Now that is to be expected, and I think in the long run it will make us better, but it's still a fact. And we didn't start the season with 2 walkons starting on the O-Line. Only Cody Sullins was listed as a partial starter w/ Josh McNeil. Cory was not a starter until Vlad went down. But I think it's phenomenal what the staff did with the players we had. And Kiffin has gotten UT a ton of attention & riled up vol nation, but it wasn't all positive. See Pahokee.

I think he deserves serious consideration for SEC coach of the year, but he won't get it. Too many people dislike him.

I'll have to go with Mullen. At MSU, it's only Mullen.

At UT, it's Kiffin and the best coaching staff in the nation. While Kiffin (and staff) did some miraculous things this year given injuries and no depth as well as turning Crompton into a legit All-SEC QB... it's still Kiffin and staff.

From a rival fan...

I would say if it was just by what they did with the team they put on the field each week and where they were last year- Mullens with Kiffin being an inch behind.

But if you go overall (including recruiting) Kiffin! hands down

Im sorry but Gene Chizik wouldn't be nothing without Gus Malzhan and that cute lil highschool offense they run.

1a) Mullen
1b) Kiffin
3) Chizik

Good points and a fair assessment.

Auburn if anything underachieved looking at their schedule this season. They only finished 3-5 in the SEC as well and really fell off as the season progressed.

I still amazes me how clueless some people are about the talent we have on campus right now. UT did not have the depth of talent that Auburn had. And its not even close. To think otherwise is ridiculous.

It's not even close at all. Auburn has way more talent when you look at all 85 scholarship players.

We basically went 7-5 this season playing 3 Defensive Tackles, that is virtually unheard of in the SEC. Then you factor in all the walk-ons that had to play and the horrible players we had in the kicking game, etc...

Just an amazing accomplishment to go 7-5 this season.

Kiffin also should have won 3 more games...UCLA, AwwBarn, and Alabama.

What a year this would have been for the vols if he would have pulled those 3 out.

True, but 7-5 is still incredible considering the team that Kiffin was left with this season.

Kentucky..a 'QUALITY WIN"???? after 25 yrs in a row? GA ...not this year, Carolina I still have doubts about.

7-5 was a decent year with the talent. OK! but to say those 3 wins are Quality???? NO. Sorry.
