3 Safety Look

Wow! Have you offered your wisdom to the coaching staff? You should, and it would fix everything!!

Now really, do you think the coaching staff, Shoop, is not using what combination of players he thinks gives the defense the best chance to win? The coaches jobs are on the line, and you don't think they are playing to win? Give it a rest.

I know right!

Coaches can't make mistakes. They risk their job if they make the wrong call.

And we all know...coaches never get fired........

That's called a "Nickel" defense. One DB in the box.
A nickel is generally a CB, The 4-2-5 (Which UT uses a lot) is the package with the extra safety usually called a rover. Shoop has a OLB he calls a star(rover) that steps out in coverage in passing situations.

Any thoughts on our Vols playing with 3 safeties the rest of the way instead of a 4-3 package? No disrespect to Jumper (he gives his all), but he can't get through blocks and is on the ground seemingly every play. Why not have Nigel Warrior play a hybrid LB/S role to help out the defense.

Here's an even better option...replace jumper. Lol. I absolutely hate the "the system is too complicated for them to learn at this point". If thats the case, we have some idiots in charge. Point blank, you should never run a scheme too complex for your best players.
You identify your best athletes, and scheme to their capabilities.
At the end of the day it it's more about billys and joes than X's and O's

Different versions of the same thing.

whoa whoa whoa.. you are making a lot of silly assumptions here.

1. Prove to me that with jumper in the last 2 years we have had issues with players being out of position (initially) on defense. Show me tape.. I know you can't. Players being out of position hasn't been our issue when he is in the game. Just hasn't period. Players not taking the right angles and missing tackles has been.

2. Coltons intelligence has nothing to do with his race. Football intelligence and regular every day intelligence are actually not the same thing anyway. it has to do with some guys just get it and some have a lot of experience doing so. Jumper has the advantage clearly in experience on all other options.

3. Stop hating on Jumper. Please people.. the dude does a well above average Job at his position. He has earned every snap he has taken and produced. People cherry picking stats/plays disgust me. If you want to find weakness I can go back and show you tape on every MLB drafted last year and show you 3-4 plays in a game where he looked lost.[/QUOTE]

You have lost it op. Well above average made me burst into tears!

You do know Jumper is second on the team in total tackles? Not sure how that would be possible if is on the ground seemly every play, unless because he's in on the tackle which would put you on the ground.

This the "skinny" on Jumper and point blank teams that we play scheme against Jumper and run plays that make him involved as they know THEY WILL WIN THE MATCHUP when Jumper is involved. Watch how McElwain involves Jumper on plays...........w/ sweeps and RBs out of the backfield to Jumper's side.....

Pretty good insight here. Its kinda like coaches scheme to other coaches weakness.

And here at Tennessee we cry about offense doing things that we cant easily defend

The whole thing sounds counter productive...you take an average run D and decide to put in a base nickel? I wouldn't mind seeing them look for opportunities to go 5-2 and force long downs. Also, Jumper has made tackles, don't have the stats here in front of me, but it was discussed during this past weeks game. I want to see NW, but in positions to be successful.

I wonder how many "solo" tackles he has. He always makes it there but instead of stopping the carrier for a 2 yard gain they plow through him and get 5. On screens, sweeps and outside runs hes a liability because hes not a threat to blow it up in the backfield or "set the edge". Lets watch how teams single him out in coverage and throw all over him, we are lucky neithier team we played had a passing game. Its sad to watch a team play a weak link when theh have talent wasting away on the bench.

Those aren't safties you're seeing, it's the defensive linemen.

Butch is trying a new strategy.

I think Jumper greases himself down w/ Vaseline before every game as even when he does get to a ball carrier or receiver, he just slides down off of them.........

Well, so much for coming to one of your parties.

my untrained eye on the Vols defensive roster, I like a 4-2-5 defense, especially in Gainesville.

Will be interesting to see how we line up bit i think with a 425 we will get ran over. Our dline is weak, really week. Taylor has been the only bright spot. Taking away that extra lb will not help that. UF hasnt really show much in the pass game. I say you drop folks in the box and make them beat you passing. But the way our secondary is, its kind of a lose lose.

not really....Phillips had a good game last week and Kmac, while not making splash plays has been doing his job. agree though that taylor has stood out...

we'll see how we do as we get 'back to normal' in the coming weeks.
