3 Points in the 4th Quarter

I don't think they do. I think people are splitting the 20 minute halfs into 4 10 minute quarters for discussion purposes. 3 points in the last 10 minutes really sux.

I'm correcting myself. I see the NCAA did approve a change to four quarters from two halves this season. Shows how close I'm paying attention.

I got numbers, too, Amb:

In our last four SEC losses, to florida, arkansas, kentucky and miss. state, DeShields has
shot 32 percent and averaged more than 6 turnovers against about 1 assist.

She was 6-21 against florida, with 7 turnovers
She was 5-15 against kentucky, with 8 turnovers
She was 6-16 against arky with 7 turnovers
She was 1-4 against miss. state with 3 turnovers. Those are bad numbers for anybody--the turnovers numbers are crazy bad. Maybe she was just overrated coming in, as, according to another thread, her numbers this year are pretty close to her numbers as a freshman, two years ago. She needs to play harder, get to the foul line more, and above all make better decisions. Stop trying to make cute passes that aren't there, and start taking better shots and squaring up when you shoot. She seems to just decide that she's going to shoot, whether it's good or not, whether she's balanced and squared up to the basket or not. We can't win with her playing like she has, that is for sure. She could be, and should be, the leader of this team--but she most decidedly is not. She needs to drop the princess act and start playing harder and tougher. She ought to watch some film on Diana Taurasi.

I don't disagree with any of the things you think needs to improve in Diamond's game. She's not a game changer in the same vein that the best in the game have been. However, she's by far the best player on this team. Even with all the numbers you posted, she still has the 3rd highest FG% on the team and the best of all of the non-post players. And that's not a compliment to Diamond as much as putting the rest of the backcourt on blast.

The comparison numbers posted in my previous post were for Andraya Carter, who has been dead weight all season, but somehow it's the leading scorer's fault for not having help. If her and Reynolds brought as much to the table as Diamond does, Tennessee wouldn't have 8 losses. They have been liabilities all season (although Jordan seems to be playing better now).

Pinning it on Diamond when there are other players much more deserving of the criticism (especially as veteran starters) makes no sense. Yes, she can improve, but most of her teammates need to improve even more.

I don't like Warlick as a coach--but there are definite player issues on this team. I mean, last year's team was much better than this one--same staff. Lack of leadership, talent issues, and I get a sense that DeShields has not meshed at all with this team. Seems like she wants to be above it all instead of just going out and playing a solid basketball game and being a great teammate. Or maybe I'm wrong and she's just played bad basketball in 80 percent of our games. Whatever it is with her--attitude and bad play or just the bad play--DeShields seems a lot more problem than solution for the Vols.

i don't understand DeShields play either, there are way to many turnovers by her and to be fair,i'm not sure about her injuries this year either,I don't know if that is affecting her play or not

i thought they played better without her in the game than they did with her

of course that is because Reynolds is starting to play really good too :)

well the zone defense did them in when the the 4th quarter rolled around

they did have 3 good quarters though, there finally starting to play better, but there about where they should have been around the half way point during the first half of the season, not this time of year

Dunbar could have made 2 3s in the 4th for 6 points, but the dimwit Warlick doesnt know how to use her. Dunbar is clearly the best athlete and shooter on the team and is horribly mis used

she hasn't played in the last couple of games, she must be in the dog house for some reason that we will never hear about

Four quarters seem too long a time for players and coaches to maintain motivation and concentration. Team should lobby for game start in the fourth quarter. However, an overtime outcome might appear unseemly and suggest that that lack of physical exertion and teamwork are factors of evaluation and outcome.

Further suggestion for placing the basket in floor to artificially improve shooting percentage will exacerbate growing consensus that many of the current HS All Americans lack shooting acumen. Any thought of do-overs suffers from the same yet tired ESPN critique of the Vols sputtering offensive.

Perhaps elongated practice time might be useful. Coupled with players taking on multiple roles as coaches and mentors and resident experts, I see hope, but from very afar.

Where do you think she will transfer to ? I am guessing Notre Dame
Dunbar may as well transfer. This staff has no idea how to utilize her talents nor do they seem like they will. They claim she is a liability on defense but Pat found a way to use shooters. Shanna, Angie and Syd saw the floor a lot. Syd was the best defender of the three but they could all light up the scoreboard. They generally have just thrown Kort in game out of desperation. Too little time to get in a rhythm and get comfortable. She has been forced to put up crazy shots. It's not fair to waste her talent this way.

Why in the heck Holly refuses to use the team's best shooter when the offense has gone stagnant is beyond me.

meanwhile the team has lost 4 out of 6 games.

Why do you believe Dunbar is the best athlete on the team?

If Becky Hammon gets to Knoxville before KD transfers you will see why I believe she is the best - Becky cant get here soon enough. This Warlick clown and her inept staff, has got to go

the tempo slowed down when the MSU coach decided to quit being bull headed and went to a 2-3 zone to stop the dribble penetration. When they did that just like the other teams that have handled us we had no offense to run. You would think that we could eventually learn at least 2 or 3 sets to run against a zone but I haven't seen one yet.

If they don't learn how to score against a zone, they will lose every game the rest if the year. One can not beat zine by standing around at the top of the key and turn the ball over trying to get the ball inside and end up with a turn over. Moving the ball quickly against the zone can get open shots and can get the ball inside. However, when one gets the ball inside, someone has to be able to catch the ball and either hit a shot or hit an open outside player for the open jumper.

Good coaching is adjusting to the moves of the opposing coach. Three points a quarter adds up to 12 for a game. That may be good enough for you , but I expect much more than what I saw in the 4th quarter against MS.

I was thinking the exact same thing before I ran out of booze.

It was an honest question, will you answer it?

She is not the best player on the team. Only hyped to be. Nowhere near her rating or hype. They all need to improve especially Diamond and Russell. Top billing recruits playing below average basketball. A good coach would have their attention.

She deserves to play but man she takes some ugly shots.
