3-light RROD on xBox

Turned it on last night to an immediate RROD. No overheating. Worked fine a few days prior. I have read all over the net, but there seems to be a bunch of bad advice out there. Anyone have success with fixing this?

Take the hd off, climb up on top your house with the remaining console, now throw it as far as you can. Climb down & go purchase a new one.

Probably the best advice. Those old Xbox's are pieces of s***. Go ahead and just buy a newer one for $200. They are a lot more stable. I had the RROD 3 times and I went through 3 old gen Xbox's. But once I got the slim model it's be perfect.

If I were to get a new model, how do I transfer my game progress on the HD?

You can buy a transfer kit that connects the old HD to a computer through USB and it'll extract your data to computer then from there you can just take those files and put them on a flash drive and connect that to the new one.

I'm on my 3rd xbox, I've had this one since 2008, the next one will have Kinect with it!!!!!!
The best advice is to download your games to the hard drive, the console will stay cooler and last longer if you just play games from your drive. :hi:

1. Does the heatsink repair work if the RROD appears as soon as it's turned on? It started that way and has been consistent.

2. If I try to fix it, where do I buy thermal paste?

3. If I don't, where do I get one of these handy new "transfer cables?"

Newegg.com has thermal paste. If your 360 is RRODing as soon as you fire it up, after you do the X-clamp fix, unhook the fan and let your moboard overheat one time before you put everything back together.

I got it at WalMart. About 15 dollars, I believe.

You guys may find it unbelievable, but I tried the "towel trick" (as I couldn't justify the time and $ spent to try to open the bastage up) and IT WORKED! I guess it melts the solder back into place? Who knows how long it will last, but I'm glad I didn't burn the house down!

Good way to burn your house down......just sayin and it will last about a week tops....most of the time

I did the towell trick and it worked about a month. Then i had to ship it to Microsoft to get it fixed(replaced).

You may try this: my friend had gotten the RROD 3 times so the 4th time he called and spoke to a rep and complained, and they sent him a slim back. So complaining may help.
