3 complaints

I will say this as someone who coached the game for 14 years....and my hunch is every single basketball coach in America would agree with me. You ALWAYS take the points. EVERY SINGLE TIME!!! It's not even a debate. You ALWAYS take the sure thing. Can you imagine the outrage if he had NOT taken them...gotten fouled...and we LOSE on a long 3??? With all due respect to the OP.....you ALWAYS take the points.

I also thought Admiral should have dribbled out, but at the same time, it's hard to criticize him for dunking. The only thing at the back of mind was how UK got the Vandy game to OT and I didn't that weird crap to happen to us. UK pulls some out of their axs at that place.

Curious to what you guys think about 3 things I point to as being areas that could have cost us the game at Rupp.

1) I was disappointed that Turner fired up the 3 pt shot with 10-12 seconds left in the first half instead of holding for the last shot. Sure he made it but Kentucky also scored afterward.

2) I was furious with Schofield for dunking Instead of dribbling the clock out at the end.

3) this is my biggest one and I thought it was going to cost us the game. We went from 4pts up to 3 down in that stretch around the 5min mark because we couldn't stop the dribble on the perimeter. We had great success against Kentucky the first game in the zone and they were shooting awful again from the outside. I was shocked Barnes didn't go zone at least a few possessions late.

Now I know many are going to say we won but when it goes down to the wire it isn't always black and white imo

Agree on the AS dunk. Told my wife (a UK fan) the same thing. I said aloud to her that this is the most Tennessee way to possibly lose a game.

We won get a life.

You can be happy with a win and still see room for improvement and areas where we weren't fundamentally sound.

This...I don’t agree with the Schofield take, but I think the other 2 were probably pretty valid points. Again we played far from our best game and still won at Rupp, I don’t think this team has played its best ball yet.

22,

I was at Rupp and the happiest SOB wearing orange you have ever seen. Just talking about things that might bite us later.

The only legit gripe you have is number 3 because we were careless with the ball in that stretch and we seem to do that almost every game. But I’m never going to be mad at our guys for making shots. So what, Turner made a 3 with too much time on the clock. I’d rather us get the points than miss out on them. He was open and he’s proven he can make clutch shots. Nobody should be mad at Admiral. You take the sure points and don’t even chance it. You know why? We have a smart coach who told our guys to foul before they got a shot off and force Kentucky to try and get an offensive rebound putback on a purposefully missed free throw. The chances of them getting that are worse than making a half court shot. I guarantee you Barnes didn’t get onto Admiral for that dunk or Turner for a made 3. So why should we?

No doubt I was mad at scohofield

I wasn't mad at him just not the best play in that position. On the other hand if you've ever been in the position of a fast break, you realize that taking the ball to the basket is all thats on your mind. It worked out.

Agree totally with #1. You take last second shot.

#2 Totally wrong here. You always take uncontested layups/dunks. It put us up 3. Worst case is they hit a last gasp 3 and put game in OT. If they foul him and he makes 1 of 2 then they hit last second three we lose.

It’s more important to get the points if you have an open look. Just need to get back and play D. Also Shai hit a tough shot, not like they gave him a layup. Just can’t let him get that close

No doubt it was a tough basket. High degree
OF difficulty

To me, Schofield, knowing there was 40 feet between him and the closest KY player, could have, and should have just played keep away and dribbled out the clock. Heck, he could have even just dribbled to the furthest corner and then chucked the ball as far as he could in the air with 2 seconds to go and if he got fouled after that, it would have been intentional.

I see it similar to a football player going down at the 5 yard line instead of scoring to give his team the chance to run the clock out rather than give the ball the the opponent with a chance to win.

He could have also stood under his own basket until he had to shoot a layup and take as much time off as possible.

It's easy for us to think up scenarios after the fact though. In the heat of the moment, I get that his mind was on one thing only.

Schofield knew there was 40 feet between him and the closest KY defender?

Well he was turned toward everyone else awaiting the pass. He had full view of the court. Or do you think he caught that pass from Bowden without looking?

You missed BTO and my discussion last night. He posted pics. The gap was 17-18ft

Looks like he's watching the ball and not the defender that's 10-15' behind him.

I concede the fact that his mind was solely on scoring, and I'm okay with that. It wasn't his only option, and whether it was his best option is debatable.

I don't like the idea of Schofield having to make critical free throws. Adding the easy points is the only way to play it out IMO.

After talking about this for a day I don't think it's fair to expect a player to know the exact time left there. Even though I still think he could have run the clock out I don't blame him for it now.
