The 3-4 is more susceptible to zone running plays. That is why Lame Kiffen was able to have some success running the ball against Bama in 2009. How many teams left on the schedule use a zone running base? obviously not Misery(Mizzou), but which other teams?VOLNATION help please. I know every team has broken off long runs except nc st, but most of the long runs except the Gator 80 yarder looked to be a zone running play

The 3-4 is the best D going for many reasons.

On every play you're always taking chances of getting beat.

Example...We blitz the OLB who's running in as fast as he can to try and sack the QB...He either gets blocked up above the QB or he gets cut down and the edge is open for the RB to take off and the S has to come in fast and make the tackle.

S misses the open field tackle and bye, bye to the RB.

The 3-4 D takes 2 years to perfect in the NFL where they practice 10 to 12 hours per day and our kids don't get 1/2 that practice time and we're only 5 games into the change over.

We'll see alot more mistakes this season but CDD and CSS are correcting things as fast as possible.

What confuses me is that in 1 quarter our kids play D lights out and give up very little and then the nexy quarter they slack up and get burned way too much.

At UGA we only gave up 1 1st down in the 4th qtr when our kids should have been worn out and that's great effort.

If we can get the consistency down to where our D can play like that the entire game we'll be very hard to beat by anyone.

In the 3-4 D the LBs are a very important part of the D and we're still a little short on the bigger, fast LBs for a solid 2 deep rotation and they need to be bigger, stronger and tougher because the LBs are supposed to rush up into the line and make most of the tackles.

I have no idea how many LBs that CDD and CSS are trying to get for our next recruiting class but I'll bet it's a serious priority for them.

the 3-4 being more susceptible to zone running plays comes from coach Belicheck,Gruden, Dungy,Parcells and Tomlin. Yes, I know Dungy and Gruden ran mostly cover 2

Thanks Don.

If you watch the Patriots they're mostly a 3-4 D but they'll change over sometimes and run a 4-3 D to try and add more confusion to it.

I really thought that's what we would do this year but I guess CDD and CSS thought that was way too much to throw at our kids so they focused on the 3-4 for now.

I think in the next 2 years, if CDD is still here, that we'll be doing 3-4 and 4-3 as our Sophs, Juniors and Seniors come along and know both really well.

Then I think the new incoming Freshmen will focus on only 1 D their Freshman year and add the other D to it in their Soph year.

Just my guess though.

Zone Running is very effective against defenses that can't get off blocks. The stretch plays are good against teams that can't get off blocks and can't set the edge. We can do neither. It doesn't help when our secondary doesn't make open field tackles, etc. Just be patient the 3-4 isn't the problem...

Pretty sure the Pats went back to a base 4-3.

That said, the top NFL Ds use a 3-4. Except Chi. They're still 4-3. I think.

Watch a 49ers game. They eat the RB zone block or not. Its more about the players and scheme. Our guys are still learning gap assignments. Smith is lost, Maggit is playing injured, Lathers isn't flowing to the ball carrier, Brewer plays out of position and everyone tackles like pee wee league. We will get there but takes time to learn the system and time to get players.

This is just wrong in premise and in what was ran against us.
