Most people in the current Tennessee program do their best to avoid anointing anyone before they’ve earned it, but what we’ve consistently heard behind the scenes is clear. If Phillips doesn’t turn into a great player, the people around him will be surprised. This staff believes in Phillips as a player and as a person, and they love the way he goes about his business. He’s the right combination of hungry, humble and confident that helps young players grow.

I would love to see him come alive this year and stay healthy.

Modern college football is a brutal game and so much of a players contribution to his team is based off him staying healthy. Here's hoping that Kyle's shoulder is 100% and he has the break out season we all want for him.

This guy is the wildcard of our d-line.

Barnett and Tuttle (when healthy) have proven they are elite players. Kahlil and Kongbo have garnered a lot of hype this summer. I think we all expect them to also be elite. If Kyle joins them and lives up to his star rating, we might have the best freaking defensive line in America.

Barnett
Tuttle
McKenzie
Kongbo
Phillips

That's 5 potential first rounders if they play up to their ability.

Its scary how good we can be.

I know Dave Lawson was relieved because of the abundance of injuries and particularly shoulder injuries. What specifically in the regemin was causing so many shoulder injuries?

Terrible luck and maybe Dave Lawson imo

Hit with your shoulder and not your head, could be a factor.

In the press conference yesterday morning Butch said Butcher would be cleared by mid to late august. He had a knee scope last month I believe. I know that Butcher had a pretty intense knee surgery last fall (August/September) so I'm thinking they did the knee scope to check on the status of the the knee currently (?). I'm no doctor. I don't think a guy like Butcher would just be "recruited over". He's been here one year, his redshirt year, and he was a 4 star coming out of high school with blood lines in the NFL. Based on reports from his dad (who used to/is on this forum) saying he hit the gym hard, can now bench 225lb 30+ times. Not to mention the coaching staff had him gain 20 lbs from the time he signed to now. So he's now 6'2-6'3, weighing 275lbs, strong as an ox and a motor for days. Sounds to me like they're investing in this kid. I'm pumped to see him play Andrew Butcher - Hudl

EDIT: Side note, since the thread is about Kyle Phillips, I was glad to hear that from the list of injury recoveries yesterday, Phillips wasn't mentioned on that list. I think it's safe to assume that he's 100%.

If Phillips pushes for a lot of snaps it will mean very good things for our squad. 30 days. 30 more days.

Phillips is supposed to be the Vols fastest defensive lineman by far, he just needs to stay healthy and show why he was rated a 5* recruit on the football field

Barnett, Vereen, Phillips, Taylor, Smith, Kongbo, Mixon, Lewis. Just added McDaniel to 2016 class. Who's he playing ahead of at 275 lbs at DE. If he moves down to DT he's very small at that weight, and, how much quickness and explosion has he lost after packing on 30-35 lbs? And he's coming off significant injury and is falling further behind every day. Plus, he's gotta learn new techniques and how to play DT, something he's never done before.

I could be wrong but I just don't see it. Perhaps he's a depth guy who gets some snaps somewhere at some point. But we now have much better, much more athletic options at both positions IMO.

Oh don't get me wrong I agree with you that we have some pretty stellar guys now. I'm not sure how much he could contribute this year but since eligibility wise he'll only be a sophomore next year, I think he could definitely still have a major impact.

Edit: Since next year we'll be left with Phillips, Taylor, Smith, Kongbo and Mixon, having a guy that's essentially the same size as Barnett and is definitely talented in the rotation will help.

I hope you're right and that Butcher makes contributions going forward. We need guys to get to Knoxville, realize their potential and make our time and investment in their recruitment pay off. But Butcher has gotten off to such a poor start between his arrest and his injuries at UT that I fear he's gotten lost in the mix of a position group that is the deepest on the team.

Welcome to Volnation, where players are written off as busts if they aren't superstars their freshman seasons. smh

Agree and I doubt he plays this year but I think having him at DT would be best for him and the program.

When 100% healthy, we arguably have the best DL in the league imo

I'd have never thought so, but after thinking about it you're probably right. If he's up to 275, might as well put another 10-15 lbs on him and slide him down for DT depth. At 6'2" 275, I can't imagine he's athletic enough to play DE.

If we get a healthy Tuttle back and Alexis up to speed I'd agree. Bama's still right there at the top....both LSU and Georgia very, very talented as well. And can't ever count out Florida.
