According to this Nebraska but they cheat. So Oklahoma?

The record for the longest NCAA football game sellout streak is held by the Nebraska Cornhuskers, with an ongoing streak that began on November 3, 1962. As of the end of the 2024 season, the streak has reached over 400 consecutive home games at Memorial Stadium.
The streak is an NCAA record for any sport and has been a source of pride for the program's supporters, symbolizing the dedication of the fan base across generations. The streak has survived through various eras, including the successful tenures of coaches Bob Devaney and Tom Osborne, and more recent challenging periods.
Key facts about the streak:

  • Start Date: November 3, 1962, against Missouri.
  • Total Games: As of late 2024, the streak is over 400 games.
  • Home Record During Streak: Nebraska has a home record of approximately 326 wins and 77 losses during the sellout streak era.
  • The Next Longest Streak: Nebraska's streak is more than twice as long as the next-longest streak in college football history (Oklahoma at 153 games).
  • Technical Definition: The streak is maintained by all available tickets being sold, though in recent years this has sometimes involved bulk purchases by donors and sponsors to ensure no tickets remain unsold.

I've seen that Nebraska number. Sounds made up, for sure.

Sellout just means all the tickets are sold correct? Because there is no way Nebraska had all those seats filled during some of those Bo years right???
I've heard to keep the streak alive, when it gets closer to game day or game time, they will drop the ticket prices to like 5 bucks each and some donor or company will buy a massive amount.

I've also heard they will get funny with accounting by holding donations in an escrow account to use during the season to buy those left over tickets.

This makes much more sense.

It means all tickets were sold, not that there was a butt in every seat.

In order to keep their streak alive, especially a bunch of times during the Riley/Frost years, they dropped the price of unsold seats to something really cheap and a large booster purchased them all. It's a fake "streak."

It still was an impressive streak though when it was more legitimate. Lasted for 40 years or so.

Advertising consecutive "sellouts" is just marketing and PR fluff. People shouldn't really lean to heavily in it one way or ther other. There's a difference between tickets sold and gate attendance, and they word it appropriately to avoid saying the latter.

And if Nebraska has cheated, then so has Tennessee. Plenty of times over the years we've seen empty seats at Neyland for home games. Upper deck for nobodies? Definitely. And sometimes even seats in the high end donor section too, even for big games. We've had people post complaining about empty seats in the lower bowl every season. And yet we're on a sellout streak too. Again, it's all PR. All the schools find ways to work the system so they can claim sellout streaks.
