Nice article from 247 sports discussing the way that Butch has built this program and where we are in terms of how we recruit and develop players.

Inside The Rebuild: Tennessee Vols coach Butch Jones, staff position Vols for now, later

"In vanquishing the Gators last Saturday, erasing a 21-0 deficit in the process, the Vols find themselves undefeated as the calendar shifts to October for the first time under Jones, the first time in 13 years and just the seventh time after four games since 1970. For better or worse, they also own three comeback-wins this season from double-digit deficits."

We have only been undefeated 7 times after 4 games since 1970-Wow that says a lot about this team.

Last time we were 5-0...was 1998.

Big weekend!

it says more about our program. playing FL so early makes it nearly impossible to come in to October undefeated all the time.

but we absolutely have to be better than 6-20 going forward.

I truly hope that we go down to Athens and make a big statement.
Its not just home cooking shear luck or Neyland its the fight within this team.

Agreed that's an awful record. We should expect even if we fall against AtM and Bama don't close out the year undefeated. The back half of the schedule is really weak right now and Tennessee playing up to their talent should have zero problems.

If in Year 1 under Jones the Vols were casting a commercial fishing net, ready to catch all shapes and sizes, now Tennessee employs a target-specific model.

“Butch said after that second class, the 2014 class, I’ll never forget we were sitting in the recruiting room on national signing day, looking at the team, saying, “All right, this is great. Good looking class,” Welton recalled. “At one moment he says, “That’s great. I don’t want to be here for two years. I want to retire from here. How do we change our mindset in recruiting?”

Butch gonna be here as long as we want him.

this is what i like to hear, D Barnett on FL, going forward:

“I was just thinking this is a good team win for us, but this is just the beginning,” Barnett shared with 247Sports of his thoughts leaving Neyland Stadium last week. “It wasn't no shock to me that we beat (Florida). I don't think it was a shock to nobody on our team.

“I just kept thinking, 'This is the start of our journey.'”

I think Welton very clearly explains in that article why Butch & Co. don't recruit some of the elite kids that VN thinks they should have recruited.

Pretty sure he said the same thing at his last stop. All coaches do up until the day they don't.

Sure. A lot of coaches will offer platitudes to the fanbase. But he didn't say it publically this time. He said it in a private convo with Welton.

its just the way the cookie crumbles for us. some teams play back loaded schedules making it "easier" to head in to October or November with a really good w/l record, others like us, are front loaded making it easier to have a really good w/l record late.

the biggest disadvantage we have in that scenario is we don't get the benefity of 6 or so weeks to build up the resume and perception and move up the polls.

more times than not, the story is already written by late september.

so glad that's not the case this year!!:)

I didn't realize JB was over at 247 nowadays - good for him. Great article - I am finally starting to love the Vols the same way I did a decade ago

I sure hope we give him a fair run to be here a long time.

In today's 'what have you done for me lately' mentality, especially in college football, I fear we will soon forget what a nightmare we've been through since Coach Cut left the first time.

With that in mind do you think LSU will come knocking?

If a few more big time schools fire their coach, one of them might take a shot at Butch. There are a lot of attractive jobs and not a ton of hot coaches that would potentially leave. LSU will look for an anti-Miles, though, and Butch is basically Miles' twin. It would be a tough sell to their fanbase IMO.
