24 to UAB

If we’re ever in a spot where 21 or 25 have to play in the secondary, we are going to be in trouble. That was as poor as I’ve ever seen any single one of our DBs play and they both reached that distinction while sharing the field. 56 and 35 were struggling mightily, as well. I’d imagine having at least 4 of our weakest defenders playing a lot of snaps has resulted in a few too many TDs.

They scored 10 points on our "1st team" defense, that was also missing like 5 guys.
And 3 of them points were because of Boo’s muffed punt. But he did play well on defense after 1 bad coverage play. We could have beaten them worse but I am glad Heupel went deep into the depth chart in the second half. It was great experience for our 3rd and even 4th team guys to get some valuable playing time against UAB’s 1st team unit. Folks complaining about our D today need to watch the game closer. GBO

Exactly. 31 people recorded a tackle (I saw turbyville and Ross on there and it's too early for me to go through and separate defense from special teams). People are freaking out over a glorified scrimmage.

Every year the majority of fans call for the second and third stringers to get playing time in the second half of blowouts like yesterdays game. Well, now you see why they are backups. That is how good programs build depth. The players getting smoked on defense yesterday will be rotational pieces or starters in matchups that matter in the future. This board overreacts too much.

We were playing lots of young guys so communication was a problem and UAB had some weird formations that no one else we play will line up in.
Exactly. This is how you build depth. You put inferior opponents away so the young guys can take meaningful snaps and have plays on video in a live game environment that can be broken down by coaches. We have a lot of people on this board that have a severe dunning-kreuger syndrome when they think they know ball.

1st half stats- Tennessee 266 total yards. UAB 56 whopping total yards. 4 yards on the ground but was backed up by a staggering 52 yards through the air. The Vols emptied the bench because of all the big plays the first team unit surrendered in the first half. Real facts and stats for the football challenged. GBO!!!!!

Unacceptable
I recommend letting the emotions settle before posting something like this. I’m not sure how many back-ups played in the entire game, but I know for sure they played 16 Freshmen in the first half alone. Clearly the coaches are more concerned about developing depth rather than shutting out UAB.
