'22 SC SF Julian Phillips (Tennessee commit)

I was concerned midway through the season he would leave because he was getting no minutes. However, the past 10 games or so he’s gotten lots of playing time and has improved. At this point if he left I’d be shocked
He also has the support and confidence of his teammates, particularly the ones (Vescovi and James) that Barnes trusts.

Skipping Senior Day can also be interpreted as he’ll return for another year.

yeah, but Barnes comments makes me think he wants to go somewhere else and play more. Barnes closed with “regardless of what he does, he’s still part of our program”.

Exactly. He "could" come back, but Barnes's comments don't sound like he's trying to recruit him to come back. He is the only scholarship that we would loose to graduation, and Edwards has signed. More spots could ultimately open up, but at this point it's anybody' still guess.

Fulk is coming back for a 7th year?

He averaged 10 minutes per game this year. THAT is what the hell I’m talking about. He is a regular on a championship basketball team.
He played over 10 minutes twice in sec play and that was against the two worst teams in the league. This is a weird hill to die on but you do you.

The SEC is loaded with large post players therefore more bigs often see the floor. TN often puts 4 point guards on the floor. He’s the next guy up when TN wants to go with the 4 guards. He’s also a great option to have on the court when trailing opponents start fouling late.

He is the highest percentage free throw shooter on the 2020-21 team.
He was also shooting 12% higher that year from three. Seems hes regressed. Now hes probably not really a 56% shooter from the line over a larger sample, but hes not inspired confidence there this year

I am sure why youre so stuck on him. No one is advocating taking him out back and shooting him. Just saying we can use his scholarship for a higher upside player without losing much production for next year's team. Don't know how someone could really disagree with that reasonably absent some ulterior motive/bias for Bailey

I was pretty clear about reasons for not wanting to run off a big guard with a ton of experience from a championship team. He is very athletic and is a good shooter. He’s also a career 84% free throw shooter. There’s your scientific sample size instead of the 16 shot this year.

I know every time Bailey puts up a shot I’m hoping it goes in as I can’t recall a shooter of his past level go so completely cold for his senior season. If he could regain his past form he could really help this team but it appears time has run out.

I don't think anybody is going to be run of. Rick Barnes won't do that. He values the guys he has. Chandler is almost certainly going to the league. I don't expect JJJ or Santi to leave for the league.

Typically the obvious transfer would be someone irritated with their position on the roster. As many noted, that appeared to be BHH halfway through the season but he's done what several former players that transferred haven't - figure it out and work harder. I think he's a Vol. I don't think anyone is unhappy on this roster. They're so tight-knit. The next obvious choices to transfer are an upperclassman down the depth chart or a freshman who hasn't acclimated well.

Bailey and Powell would be the first to discuss as many have. Bailey especially. I love the kid and I'm glad he's been a Vol these past few years, but unless Santi/JJJ leaves there's not a window for him. He may be fine with his role though and may want to stay a "team guy" rather than be "the guy" elsewhere. Up to him. I don't think Powell will transfer twice in two years. I think he knows he has work to do to earn his time back by changing his body like Santi did this offseason.

Nobody else, unless a freshman guard like Mashack or QDj isn't panning out looks like a transfer. But we will just have to see how it shakes out. It's likely new teams come into the fray from his original finalists but we have to like where we are sitting, especially with our success and what we return.

Powell needs to take what Santi did and follow that regimen - I think he needs work and confidence, but the talent is there. Mashack needs lots of shooting and ball handling practice. Bailey is an enigma to me, but I really think a big part of it is confidence.

VB has played for 4 years, he's just fortunate that due to the Covid rule he can play a 5th somewhere if that place chooses to allow it. I don't see any reason for it to be here if we can get Phillips or another skilled player. Barnes has been pretty good at getting people moved off the roster and bringing in new guys. I've no doubt he will do it again this year, based on what we may be able to get in the class or via the portal. I could see a few more players being encouraged to move along too if we have interest from the right players.
