Yeah, although I'm not entirely sure this was 100% his decision. I'd bet he was told he was taking a pay cut to stay. And like I said months ago...guys who have been 3 places in 3 years shouldn't be expected to stick around the same school for their 4th year. His disengagement when things weren't going his way, his admission that he showed up out of shape, and his ineffectiveness for the better part of the season...those all pointed to a guy who likely wasn't going to be around. He said all the right things, but I can't see how we were going to pay him what he likely was looking for to stick around. He may have also thought he had more leverage with Felix, Cade, and JP being gone.@cncchris33 has been calling Carey transferring after this year pretty much since he committed![]()
It was a shock to the system not having ZZ and Mashack this year. Phillips and Estrella were at least 3 year dudes carrying on the culture. Vols will have 3 leftovers as it currently stands all only second year guys.
How could they have known a week ago what the market numbers would be in such a dynamically changing market? I agree they are likely acutely aware of the market today, but the financial valuations made for our returning players was done a week or more back. When some of the VN Joes were saying they’d never pay JP $1 million, BTO posted JP was offered $2 million and historically BTO has been pretty accurate with his info. Now it appears JP has been offered $3+ million. How could anybody have predicted the current mess?I wasn't insinuating you believed you knew more than the staff. Just stating that I think the staff has a pretty good grasp on what the market is. You claim its the wild west, and it may seem like that to you. I dont believe the staff shares that opinion because I think they have a better finger on the pulse of it.
SF has stated that we are much more ahead of the game than in years past. I think a large part of that is knowledge of market conditions and an idea of what guys, particularly our own guys, are worth on the open market. We set our values accordingly.
Those numbers have floated around behind the scenes for weeks, if not months. People have been in players ears all season, most likely. The average fan speculates on thise numbers, but the staff has a better idea of what the figures would look like long before. How could they have known a week ago what the market numbers would be in such a dynamically changing market?
