I suppose so, but as Chaz-Vol said we have a very recent example of a hall of fame professional football coach with more world championships than fingers on one of his hands and that has been an unmitigated disaster. He has a fairly strong recruiting pitch as well, and it hasn’t exactly served his players well.
Obviously, not apples to apples because Belichick comes with some personal life baggage that Malone doesn’t.
I guess my position is just that preparing collegiate athletes for professional sports and coaching professionals that have already made the jump are two different skill sets and I don’t think front office connections is a strong enough selling point on its own when there is a lot of uncertainty with the rest of the checklist for making your pick.
Regardless, this probably comes down to money anyway. Which is basically what every high profile recruitment comes down to these days.
