2026 Transfer Portal Thread

I think Evans could be very good. I really like him, Brown and Estrella as a core I want to keep together.

If BB also continues to improve it leaves us with only 1 really big hole and that is PG.

I’d like to find a scorer though.
I still think we have a massive hole at SG in terms of actual shooting and scoring ability. Obviously can mitigate that to a degree with a scoring PG, but that puts us right back where we are, this year. You can't possibly have too many guards who can handle, shoot, and score the ball.

I know you based that on improvements from other guys, but I just dont know if those skills are in their bag to improve.

Some transfer portal info on Basilio's blog this morning. A couple things I found interesting:

-Says Tennessee is looking for a starting PG preferably from a Power Conference, but noted they also have a few high mid major options up their sleeve.
-Mentioned a starting 2 guard and brought up Rodney Rice but indicated he's not sure if the shoulder injury will scare them away. Expects Maryland to try and lure him back and potentially overpay reading the tea leaves
-Expects Tennessee to fight Duke for Lundblade
-Thinks Boswell and/or Amari Evans could move on. Mentioned Evans has a huge offer already from a Big Ten school.
-Also want a versatile guard in addition to starting 2 guard to handled minutes that would come at a cheaper price
-Going to pursue a starting 4 hard and hunting in the high major ranks. Not happy with Carey (thank God)
-Sounds like he expects Estrella, Brown, and Cade Phillips to return. However, said Estrella is going to get a huge raise.
-Think Burg could be back to play some spot minutes as he's grown on defense
-Feels Tennessee has planned well and believes they have between $12-15 million to spend this cycle
Would hate to lose Evans, but I'm also not sure I'd want to break the bank to match a "huge offer" to keep him either.

Estrella is definitely going to get paid.

If you're forcing me to choose between Boswell or Evans, I'm taking Evans
I'd have to agree. Evans has the higher ceiling and an additional year of eligibility. I'd prefer to keep both, but I understand that if we pursue the positions I expect us to pursue, that they likely see the writing on the wall. They are similar players with similar offensive limitations. Probably only room for one to play that glue role, and I think Evans has a bit more versatility and offensive upside.

Right. It’s my hope the BB can become a reliable catch and shoot 3 pt shooter. He kinda was this year, but his release is slow and would need to speed up a lot so he could take more per game.

Evans I think could have a huge spike in scoring even as a non shooter. His balance is just something that can’t be taught. A real talent.

Estrella we know can fill it up.

I’m obviously super high on Brown but his intangibles aren’t about scoring. More his vision, passing, screening and deceptively good rim protection.

Henderson can’t be counted out. The staff obviously likes him.

Burg has shown he can be a spot up shooter. I think he’s another guy who could improve a lot.

If we really want Lundblade I bet we get him. We have this habit of getting the one guy each year we really want.

I don’t think Tanner is realistic. Hell, I bet he goes to the NBA. But Tanner would be incredible.

My only fear is that CRB sees Boswell as the "next Mashack" and chooses Bishop, when the reality is his game is much more limited than Jahmai's.

Here’s the thing though, and Mashack is a favorite, but if you look at soph year compared to Boswell, Boswells numbers are better across the board from fg%, ft%, 3pt%, assists, rebounds and points and even in steals. Yes he has olayed more minutes as well but his soph season tbh a lot better than Mashacks

I'm glad they're looking to recruit over Carey at the 4 position in the transfer portal.
I've never seen someone with his size muscle his way to create space, only to miss so many point-blank layups over the course of the season... and his free-throw percentage speaks for itself.
Just unfortunate that he's just overall worse offensively this season versus last season at Vandy.

FWIW he’s averaged 25mpg the last 14 games of the years outside of the 1 he was limited due to injury, so he’s shown the back half of the season a guy that can be 25+mpg…I don’t think it’s crazy to think he could take another 3-5mpg step next season.
And some of those were playing time decisions by CRB where JP could/should have played more. I really don't understand why so many posters create these narratives in their mind w/o looking at the actual stats.

I would bet a good amount of money JP has 1 or more offers north of $2 MM. To your point, we may not match and, as we have done in the past with other players, rely on the rel'ships and strength of our program to pay him less. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
Basillio's report reinforces the competition for JP is going to be stiff...will be interesting to see what kind of discount we can get. I bet we pay have to pay him a minimum of ~$1.75 MM next year.

Particularly agree on Evans in context of my original point. Just not sure he isn't more of a wing (which may or may not be interchangeable with SG in our offense). I don't know if we can score enough if both he and Boswell are on the floor together, but a lot of unknown until pieces fill in from the portal.

To me, Boswell's defense is overrated. He isn't close to Mashack. In fact, I think Evans profiles as more like Mashack with a higher offensive potential.

Yeah it would be hard to keep two defensive first players with offensive limitations. From team culture standpoint would prefer Boswell but agree higher ceiling/athletically agree Evans. Keep one of them and the 3 main bigs I'd be happy (Estrella, Phillips, Brown).

I get the impression Evans doesn't like living in Knoxville.

The most important hole to fill is a 3 point shooter, hopefully one who has a really good handle . Barnes can teach him defense.

Would like both Evans and Boswell to stay, think there is untapped offensive potential in both and feel like even with a couple portal signings there are roles on a FF caliber team for one as a starter and the other as a heavy usage 6 man.
