You don't have television for real?

It's hooked up to a dvd player. I teach, write about, and do talks on (or using) classic movies, mostly from the 1930s-'50s. They make a convenient intersection for discussions of literature, history, and the visual arts. I love introducing kids to analyzing what they're watching, rather than passively letting visual media wash over and through them. Not only does it help them in Lit classes (especially boys), after a teen watches and perceives all the things going on in a well made movie, their taste for the latest Marvel CGI blast diminishes quickly.

Recently I began using them with folks in assisted living whose minds needed more than the usual stimulation. I've got one 97 year old lady who's still sharp and catches lots of things in the film scenes we analyze. That's rewarding.

After my wife died, I lost all interest in the hours of shows and sports we watched together. The only thing I found I still enjoyed were the best classic movies. Pretty soon I realized that, for the cost of just a year of cable TV (that I wasn't watching anyway), I could own the best movies ever made. That collection topped out at around 300, except for 2 or 3 movies that are still in restoration. (Well, yeah, a few aren't really classics--they're just special because of her.)

I've never missed TV. I do wonder how I ever had that much time to sit around watching! So now I just stay behind on my reading.
